Wei Leping: There is still a lot of room for all-optical network 1.0, and it will embrace an open ecology in the future

"At present, China's FTTH/FTTO ratio has reached 93%, after removing FTTO is 85%, if the repeated calculation of multi-fiber access of one household is further excluded, then the actual FTTH ratio is only more than 70%, so there is still a large market space for the whole optical network 1.0." On December 16, at the 2021 Global Fiber Optics and Cable Conference, Wei Leping, director of the Science and Technology Committee of China Telecom Group Corporation, said.

Wei Leping: There is still a lot of room for all-optical network 1.0, and it will embrace an open ecology in the future

All-optical network refers to the network transmission and switching process is all realized through optical communication technology, at present, China is in the all-optical network 1.0 stage, and began to move towards the all-optical network 2.0 era. The evolution of all-optical networks stems from the huge market demand, especially the cloud-network integration that operators are currently promoting, which puts forward an urgent demand for all-optical networks. Wei Leping said that the all-optical network has a huge available spectrum (10THz), a super capacity link (100Tbps), an ultra-high speed rate (1Tbps), and a super capacity node (Pbps), which is the most ideal carrier network base for cloud-network integration.

From the perspective of development rhythm, Wei Leping believes that the evolution of the all-optical network needs to go through 3 steps: the first step, the transmission link fiberization, the current transmission network in China has been optically fiberned, is evolving to 200Gbps ~ 400Gbps rate; the second step, the access network fiberization, China is promoting the wiring section and the introduction line and even the fiber opticization of the house and the desktop, has now entered the stage of the battle, the optical copper full retreat is still a long road; the third step, the transmission node optical exchange, China Telecom's backbone network will fully open the ROADM network around the end of 2021, forming a backbone all-optical network 2.0, and continue to extend to the metropolitan area network and even the access network.

As mentioned above, the actual proportion of FTTH in China is only more than 70%, so the all-optical network 1.0 still has a large market space and still needs to continue to promote development. Of course, this proportion is well above the global average of 30%.

While the all-optical network 1.0 continues to advance in depth, with the construction of the ROADM network, the era of all-optical network 2.0 is also opened in China. Wei Leping introduced that since the opening and operation of China's first backbone ROADM network, it has saved 30% to 50% of costs, saved 50% of energy consumption and space, greatly improved the efficiency of service configuration, and achieved a direct jump in wavelength. Wei Leping said that in the next step, the inter-provincial trunk line and the provincial trunk line will be applied on a large scale, and the large metropolitan area network will be enabled on demand, marking that the all-optical network will move from 1.0 to a new era of 2.0.

Around the end of 2020, China Telecom's backbone network was fully upgraded from point-to-point chain DWDM to a full optical network with mesh dynamic networking, marking its first full optical network 2.0 at the backbone network level.

In order to cope with the challenges of weak industry development and increased external competitive pressure, reducing costs and creating a healthier and more active industrial ecology have become the key to the sustainable development of the industry. Under such a situation, China's telecommunications industry is gradually embracing an open ecosystem, including interface standardization, software and hardware decoupling, hardware white box, software open source, etc. Wei Leping believes that under such a trend, the all-optical-based transmission network will also be opened.

It is reported that AT&T has opened the world's first COMMERCIAL ROADM white-box system, and in 2019 realized a flexible, low-cost optical connection with a total length of 1300 kilometers from Atlanta to Dallas, 400 Gbps, SDN control, and the system is based on the decoupled distributed (DDC) white box design of the OpenROADM specification.

"It is an inevitable trend for all-optical networks to move towards an open ecosystem." Wei Leping thinks.
