On December 14, Airbnb released its 2022 Travel Trends Report, which analyzes future people's travel plans, travel patterns, and characteristics. Based on the survey data, under the premise of full confidence in the prevention and control of the epidemic in China, the sporadic outbreak of the epidemic has little impact on people's travel plans in the coming year.

However, under the influence of the epidemic, people's travel methods and characteristics have also quietly changed. After "meaningful travel" has become the new normal in the post-pandemic era, people are willing to invest more time and spend enjoying travel. Among them, 38% of respondents plan to spend more time traveling, 33% plan to increase travel spending, and 36% plan to increase the cost of accommodation during travel.
In addition, the report also provides insight into three major travel trends in 2022: sports tourism integration, flexible travel, and the return of outbound travel.
Sports travel fusion ignites ice and snow
With the Winter Olympics approaching, people are heating up about ice sports and ice tourism, and more people are "walking on ice and snow". In the survey, 73% of respondents have travel plans in winter, 92% want to try ice and snow sports because of the arrival of the Winter Olympics, and skiing, ice skating and sledding have become the top three popular ice and snow sports. At the same time, "Playing snow with a baby" and "one person walk" have become two different ice and snow travel scenes for parent-child families and Generation Z to choose, and everyone has become acquainted with the popularity of ice and snow tourism and explored different destinations.
In addition, whether it is ice and snow sports white or ice and snow sports pro, everyone's spending power of ice and snow tourism should not be underestimated, and there is a higher demand for accommodation quality. Cleanliness, safety, high-quality facilities and services have become the three major factors for accommodation consideration, but the price and architectural style of the house are in the back position. According to Airbnb, the number of listings with keywords such as "ice and snow" and "skiing" in the name of the homestay has increased by 5 times from 2019 to 2021, and at the moment when demand is stimulated and supply is growing, it is difficult to find a room for quality ice and snow homestays.
Travel flexibly and travel as you please
In addition to snow tourism, the impact of the epidemic and technological innovations have also spawned more flexible ways of travel. In the survey, 58% of travelers will be more flexible in making travel plans, including a walk-and-go trip, or plan a trip within 1 month before departure, or take advantage of the opportunity to travel. That is to say, more and more people want to avoid the crowds of people when traveling, go to niche or low-traffic destinations, decide on the destination based on unique accommodations (such as tree houses/boat houses), or walk while watching, and travel as they please.
In the choice of travel destinations, travel around the city is still popular, especially in the tourism circle around the big city. For example, Qinhuangdao Anaya and Zhangjiakou Chongli in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Hangzhou Tonglu and Zhoushan in jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, Gulangyu island in Xiamen, Dongshan in Zhangzhou, Huizhou in the Pearl River Delta region of southern Fujian, Leshan, Emei mountain and Chongqing fairy mountain in sichuan-Chongqing region.
Outbound travel returns
With the gradual liberalization of cross-border travel policies, the report predicts that people's confidence in outbound travel will further recover in 2022. Among them, the top three decisive factors in determining whether to travel abroad are the vaccination situation at the destination (73%), the risk level (68%), the quarantine and nucleic acid policy (60%). Of course, after a few years of traveling abroad, most people still choose to go to Asia (Japan, South Korea, Thailand, etc.). In terms of accommodation choices, nearly half of the respondents also said that they would live in homestays and short-term rental apartments.
