A million troops bravely killed the enemy, and the tenacious resistance of 31 hours became the most important battle to liberate the northeast

author:History revisited
If there is one battle that has completely accelerated the process of the People's Liberation Army, then this battle is undoubtedly the Liaoshen Campaign. In September 1948, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China ordered the Northeast Field Army to start the Liaoshen Campaign from Jinzhou. On October 1, after Lin Biao ordered the siege of Changchun, he immediately organized his troops and led the main force to the south. On October 10, the main army had reached Jinzhou. If the Kuomintang wanted to reach Jinzhou, it had to pass through Mount Pass. Our army had been ambushed early at the two highest points of Mount Pass. When the main Kuomintang army, the "East Advance Corps," wanted to reach Jinzhou from Jinxi and passed through the mountains, our Northeast Field Army launched a fierce attack directly against the "East Advance Corps." The bloody battle lasted for three days and three nights, blocking dozens of attacks by the Kuomintang troops and successfully blocking the Kuomintang troops on the road. When the Kuomintang sent troops to launch another onslaught on Jinzhou, our army also fought again and won a great victory over the Kuomintang. The main force of the Kuomintang has not been able to advance since Jinzhou. The Liaoshen Campaign was the first and most important of the three major battles, and his victory had a great impact on us. After this battle, the Kuomintang army reached the point of disintegration, and within a year the Kuomintang had lost all their territory on the mainland. So how exactly did this battle go? How are our leaders strategically deployed?

After the Meiji Restoration, Japan began to move towards an industrial country. Japan belongs to a small country, and we In China are across the sea from him, if Japan can occupy us China, then it will get rid of the limitations of a narrow territory, and it will be able to become a country with a large area in the world. Under normal circumstances, Japan is inferior to China in all aspects, its population is not as large as ours, its military weapons are not as good as ours, and Japan is not our country's opponent at all. Even if China and Japan were to move towards the pace of industrialization at the same time, the modern countries would have had the idea of annexing other countries, and our geographical location with Japan was the closest, we would certainly not be able to avoid the emergence of a situation of weak and powerful countries, and Japan may have been annexed by us.

However, contrary to expectations, when our country has moved toward industrialization in Japan, China's footsteps have remained in the traditional era of feudalism, our thinking is still aging, and there is no progress in weapons. There is a considerable gap between the level of civilization in the traditional feudal era and the level of civilization in industry. After the gap in the level of civilization, this means that even if Japan is a small country with a small population, it can make up for this gap with its advanced cultural level, so that it can catch up with China in terms of weapons and ideology. When Japan saw that China was still in a state of progress, Japan knew that their opportunity had come, which was a historical opportunity that was rare in a thousand years. In this way, the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War was certain, because China's isolation from the country at that time made China far behind Japan militarily, politically, and civilizationally. So much so that in the confrontation with the Japanese army, China repeatedly lost to the small country of Japan.

In 1945, Japan was defeated and unconditionally announced its surrender. After Japan's surrender, the northeast became a vacuum area, and both sides wanted to occupy this treasure of feng shui, so the northeast became the focus of contention between the Kuomintang and the Communists. On June 26, 1946, the Kuomintang army wanted to occupy China and unify China. He took the lead in launching an attack on the Communists' Central Plains Liberated Areas, and a civil war between the two parties broke out in full swing. In July 1948, after two years of civil war, the disparity in strength between our two parties was getting smaller and smaller. In August 1948, we, the People's Liberation Army, had taken control of more than half of the population in the northeast. The army sent by the Kuomintang to the northeast can be described as huge, and their leaders plus soldiers and logistics personnel have almost 550,000 people. At that time, the Kuomintang distributed these troops in different and disconnected areas. It is mainly distributed in Shenyang, Changchun and Jinzhou.

At that time, because our country's troops had already controlled the railway in Beining, but the land transportation from Changchun and Shenyang to Shanhaiguan was destroyed, our country's logistical supply work was quite difficult, and it all had to be transported by air. At that time, the northeast region was the first region occupied by the Japanese invasion of China, and it was also a very important area of our country, it was the most developed area of our heavy industry in China, it was also our largest agricultural output area, and it was the only army in all regions at that time where the People's Liberation Army had more military strength than the Kuomintang. Therefore, after analysis and discussion, the leaders of our country decided to choose the place for the first decisive battle in the northeast.

Faced with such a situation, the leader of our country, after much thought, a bold and risky plan took shape in his mind. If you want to take the northeast region, then the first stop must be in Jinzhou. Jinzhou, an important pass from the northeast to Guannei, because it has its own unique geographical location, so it has also become a must-fight place between the two parties. The leaders of the Kuomintang were also deeply aware of the importance of Jinzhou to this campaign, and by capturing Jinzhou, the Kuomintang would have the opportunity to defend the northeast region. Once lost, our People's Liberation Army Northeast Field Army will be able to gain the initiative in the entire northeast battlefield, and we can only be in a very passive situation.

After careful consideration, the Kuomintang leaders worked hard to choose the commander who led the team, both of whom were Jiang's right-hand men, and in order to solve the difficulties in Jinzhou, Jiang immediately dispatched these two to select elite troops from the troops to jinzhou to support. The "EastWard Marching Corps" commanded by Hou Jingru is far from Jinzhou and cannot pose a threat to our army, but the "Westward Advancing Corps" commanded by Liao Yaoxiang is only 50 kilometers away from our troops. If these two kuomintang units attack at the same time, then our Northeast Field Army will be attacked on the abdomen, and war is imminent.

At that time, when discussing how to fight Jinzhou, our chairman and Lin Biao had different ideas. The chairman wanted to directly attack Jinzhou, take it in one fell swoop, directly close the gate to the northeast, and lock the Kuomintang army in his own territory. If Jinzhou could not be directly captured, then the consequences would be unimaginable. Lin Biao, on the other hand, wanted to test the enemy army with the movement warfare he was good at, pretending to attack Jinzhou and not putting the real main force on Jinzhou.

When the "EastWard Marching Corps" commanded by Hou Jingru came to support, we sent our main force to fight a fierce decisive battle with them. Whether it is really a better chance of playing Jinzhou, or a fake victory in Jinzhou, these two methods have caused the chairman to fall into contemplation. After a few hours of thinking, the chairman still decided to hit Jinzhou and lock the gate of the northeast as soon as possible. The chairman sent a telegram to persuade Lin Biao of the Northeast Field Army to directly attack Jinzhou, which was undoubtedly not a dangerous move, and after unifying the direction of operations, they immediately discussed the battle plan.

At the end of 1948, the Northeast Field Army suddenly appeared in Jinzhou, an act that surprised the Kuomintang troops. The Kuomintang never imagined that in such a large piece of land as the northeast, the northeast field army would actually choose Jinzhou. As soon as Chiang got the telegram, he immediately knew about our chairman's strategic plan, he wanted to cut off their logistical supplies, he wanted to shut their troops out. Jiang knew that the Battle of Jinzhou was of great significance, and he immediately sent troops to Jinzhou to support, this time led by Wei Lihuang. He immediately explained the situation to the generals in Shenyang and asked Shenyang to send troops to rescue them.

In this way, the Kuomintang was able to attack from Shenyang with one team and another from the northeast, giving the Northeast Field Army a double-sided attack. However, Wei Lihuang, who led the army, thought that Lin Biao must still use his own good fighting style in this battle, the main troops must not be in the city, and if they rushed out of the city to fight, they would definitely be ambushed by the army, and our army would definitely suffer heavy losses. Therefore, Wei Lihuang did not rush to send troops, and such an idea fell into the trap of our chairman. Wei Lihuang could not see clearly the northeast field army's combat methods, and his hesitation had already passed for three days. In these three days, Lin Biao led the Northeast Field Army and did not idle, they took the lead in attacking the surrounding areas of Jinzhou, occupying more than half of the cities and counties around Jinzhou, and at this point, Jinzhou's contact with the outside world had been completely severed.

When Jiang heard such news, he immediately organized several troops to start from the east and contact Wei Lihuang at the same time, but who knew that Wei Lihuang did not listen to Jiang's advice at all, and there was no way for Jiang to fly to Shenyang, and bypassed Wei Lihuang and directly let Liao Yaoxiang send troops to rescue him. At that time, our army was facing a situation of front and rear attack, and Lin Biao was immediately panicked when he saw such a situation. He and three other generals simultaneously called the chairman to explain the situation on the battlefield, and they suggested that they should not fight Jinzhou first, but Changchun first. When the chairman saw such a telegram, he immediately burst into anger, but it would take at least two or three days for the chairman to call back and forth.

The current war situation is so tense. At this moment, Luo Ronghuan saw something wrong, he thought that he had now attacked half of Jinzhou, and the situation was really not good if he gave up now, Lin Biao suddenly reacted, and indeed should not give up. But the telegram had already been sent, and if the chairman called back, he was afraid that it would delay the fighter, so the three of them decided to go as originally planned, and sent another telegram to the chairman. When the Chairman saw the second telegram, his heart let go.

Before this great war, Chiang Kai-shek made a mobilization meeting, and the momentum of both sides was very high, and they fought with the determination of your death and death, and such a big war began. The great war first began at Tashan, a small village, but the railway and the road had to pass through here, and Tashan was already occupied by our People's Liberation Army. When Jiang saw such a village, he did not pay attention to it at all, and Jiang felt that it could be blown up with shells, which made Lin Biao anxious, and he said: We must guard Tashan, he only needs Tashan. Wu Kehua, who received the order, knew that as long as he could win the victory of Tashan, he would be able to block the road of Jiang Aiding Jinzhou.

While Chiang Kai-shek's reinforcements were still on the road, the Kuomintang, which was responsible for attacking Jinzhou, could not wait, and he took it upon himself to lead the army to start the offensive, first carrying out two bombings of more than 40 aircraft, and most of the protective positions of our Northeast Liberation Army were destroyed. After the bombing stopped, the Kuomintang launched a fierce attack on our army, and in the face of this attack after attack, 170 people of our People's Liberation Army, who held out with their lives for six days, finally held Tashan and killed more than 7,000 enemy troops.

In the course of these six days, the Northeast People's Liberation Army occupied various strongholds in Jinzhou City and forced the Kuomintang troops into Jinzhou City step by step, and when the Kuomintang troops saw such a situation, they quickly explained the situation to Jiang and asked for assistance, and Jiang immediately asked his friend for support. When the Northeast Field Army fought outside Jinzhou City, the old lair of the Kuomintang in Jinzhou City had been beaten by our army and had no ability to resist. When our army entered, we found that the leader of the Kuomintang had disappeared and had long since escaped. But within two days, they were captured by the soldiers of our Northeast Field Army.

When the Chairman heard the news, he was very happy, and he did not expect that the war would take only two days. But the war was not over, and the ace army led by Chiang was still there. Jinzhou was successfully taken, and in the northeast region, the Kuomintang only had two isolated cities, Changchun and Shenyang. At this time, Changchun City was already besieged by most of the troops of our troops, and even the airfield was occupied by our army, and it was basically impossible for the Kuomintang to obtain supplies from the outside world. However, the Kuomintang also wants to eat, the people also want to live, and without external supply, the problem of food and clothing for the Kuomintang army has become the biggest problem.

A million troops bravely killed the enemy, and the tenacious resistance of 31 hours became the most important battle to liberate the northeast

Under such circumstances, the Kuomintang could only choose to airdrop to Changchun. To feed the 100,000 soldiers who guarded the city, 40 planes were needed every day, and the Kuomintang did not have 40 at all, only 12, from 12 at the beginning to only 3 a day, because the supply of aircraft was decreasing, and there were differences within the Kuomintang, because the distribution of grain was uneven, resulting in different soldiers eating differently. It was under such circumstances that the Kuomintang accepted Chiang's orders and let them find their own way to survive. Zeng Zesheng was a general of the Kuomintang at that time, he saw that his soldiers did not have enough to eat, if they wanted to fight, they had no strength at all, and the task of defending the city would fail sooner or later, so he decided to revolt. When he told this idea to another Kuomintang general who was also defending the city, the other general did not object or send troops. Thus the Kuomintang uprising failed. Our North China Liberation Army occupied Changchun, and Changchun was peacefully liberated.

When he saw that the northeast region had become like this, Liao Yaoxiang sent a telegram to Jiang, which meant: Abandon the northeast, it has become like this. However, Chiang Kai-shek did not want to abandon the northeast easily, and he ordered Liao Yaoxiang to go to Jinzhou to support, as long as Jinzhou was held, there was still some hope of occupying the northeast region. After Liao Yaoxiang received the order, if he wanted to reach Jinzhou, he had to pass through Montenegro, and our party leader ordered that Liao Yaoxiang must be blocked and intercepted in Montenegro. Lin Biao entrusted this heavy responsibility to Liang Xingchu, who led the strength of these five troops and began to confront Liao Yaoxiang's troops head-on. The number of troops led by Liang Xingchu was only one-third of the number of Liao Yaoxiang's troops. Faced with such a disparity in strength, Lin Biao immediately issued an order to die, three days, only three days, three days.

On October 23, Liao Yaoxiang launched a fierce attack on this Montenegro, the Kuomintang's military strength was very strong, their aircraft, shells took turns to strafe the Montenegrin stronghold occupied by our army, after this bitter battle, our army only had 5 people left, but the task of holding out for three days must be completed. Lin Biao called Liang Xingchu, and the remaining soldiers and pawns also wanted to defend the Black Mountain for me. Liang Xingchu also made up his mind and said: I will be the commander of the regiment with one regiment, and I will be the commander of the company, and I will swear to hold the high ground to the death and complete the task. In this way, after three days of fighting with each other, the Nationalist army suffered 8,000 casualties and our army suffered 4,100 casualties, and the casualties on both sides were very heavy, but the final victory belonged to us.

A million troops bravely killed the enemy, and the tenacious resistance of 31 hours became the most important battle to liberate the northeast

After Liao Yaoxiang's failed attack on Montenegro, Liao Yaoxiang saw that the timing was not good and wanted to return to Shenyang overnight, the retreat route of the retreating army had been cut off by our army, Liao Yaoxiang wanted to return to the camp from the south, but our army also destroyed Liao Yaoxiang's idea, Liao Yaoxiang had nowhere to retreat, so step by step he entered Liao Yaoxiang's lair, completely annihilated the Kuomintang 100,000 people, so his army failed, liao Yaoxiang himself was captured by the soldiers of our army. On the third day after the end of the Montenegrin War, Jiang arrived in Shenyang by plane, he heard that there were suspicious people in the city, Jiang did not dare to enter the city, but called out his former capable generals and held a meeting, after the meeting, when he took a plane to return to Shenyang, he let the plane rotate around the northeast for a week, and he said: This is the last time I will see you.

On October 30, there was a riot in Shenyang City, wei Lihuang saw that Shenyang could not be defended, so he fled in a panic, at this time the only Kuomintang guarding Shenyang city was Zhou Fucheng, who led the 80,000 Kuomintang to guard Shenyang. Zhou Fucheng was very happy to see that Wei Lihuang was gone, because he had finally fulfilled his dream, and he had finally become the supreme leader of the Northeast Kuomintang. But what he never expected was that such a happy time would disappear so quickly, and his men had already discussed with the Northeast Field Army and were ready to surrender.

On November 1, 1948, the Northeast Field Army outside Shenyang began to attack Shenyang, and Shenyang City was easily taken down. When the Northeast Field Army entered the city of Shenyang, they saw that the Kuomintang soldiers gathered in pairs and walked around and chatted, and when the Northeast Field Army passed by them, they naturally handed over their guns to the Northeast Field Army. When the people in Shenyang saw the Northeast Field Army come in, they were very happy, and when they saw the Kuomintang surrender their weapons, they all sang happily in their mouths and walked on the streets with smiles on their faces, and with the liberation of Shenyang, the Liaoshen Campaign was over. The Liaoshen Campaign ended successfully with the result of a great victory of the People's Liberation Army.

A million troops bravely killed the enemy, and the tenacious resistance of 31 hours became the most important battle to liberate the northeast

After the end of the Liaoshen Campaign, the total number of the People's Liberation Army continued to increase, and for the first time, the strength of our People's Liberation Army exceeded that of the Kuomintang. Our chairman once said that it was expected that from July 1946 onwards, it would take about four or five years to defeat the Kuomintang, but now it seems that it is only now that he wants to defeat him. Just one year is enough. Sure enough, as the chairman said, a year later, New China was founded. The comprehensive victory in the Liaoshen Campaign reversed the strategic situation of the People's Liberation Army and completed a major reversal in history, thus giving our soldiers of the Communist Party of China a great deal of self-confidence and accelerating the process of the People's Liberation War.

Now that our living conditions are getting better and better, the people no longer have to accept oppression. Our happy life is not easy to come by, and it is exchanged by thousands of heroes and martyrs with their blood donations.
