The Three Madmen of the Republic of China: A different master in the style of the Republic of China

author:The clouds of bells fly

Zhang Taiyan, Liu Shipei, and Huang Kan also called them the "Three Madmen of the Republic of China".

Zhang Taiyan took the "Boy Scout Test" at the age of 16, and the question was: On the Splendid Great Qing Dynasty. Zhang Taiyan faced this problem and thought that after the Opium War, the Qing government was weak and incompetent, allowing the great powers to divide China and make a blessing in China. So he wrote a letter of illness, condensed his anger into the end of his pen, and finally called on "the people of our country to restore China as a top priority." In less than an hour, Zhang was the first to hand in the papers. The chief examiner saw that he was quick in thinking, and he could not help but be secretly amazed, and then looked at his text, and was horrified. At this time, Zhang was about to step out of the examination room, and the chief examiner took the case and stopped drinking: "Slow, you are so bold!" Knowing the guilt..." Zhang was not profane or humble, and said frankly: "What I think is in line with the thoughts of the people of today's country; what I say is in line with the reality of the national conditions, what is the crime?" Suddenly, there was an uproar in the examination room. The chief examiner was afraid that things would be too big, so he ordered two messengers to take Zhang out of the examination room. Zhang's family was frightened to see the situation, but Zhang was at ease. Later Huang Kan's "Records of Mr. Taiyan's Actions" recorded: "The king of the angry foreign races in China, that is, determined not to advance." ”

Zhang Taiyan

In the autumn of 1898, after the failure of the Penghu Reform Law, Zhang Taiyan vigorously advocated the revolution, and Cai Yuanpei invited Zhang to the Patriotic Society to give a revolutionary speech, and the content of the speech was subsequently published in the "Su Bao", which caused the anger of the Qing government. It happened that at that time, Zou Rong wrote the book "Revolutionary Army" and asked Zhang Taiyan to write a preface for it. The Qing court seized the Su Bao and the Patriotic Society, and confiscated property. Because Zhang Taiyan unceremoniously referred to the Guangxu Emperor as a "clown of Zai xiang" in the preface, the Qing court took Taiyan to court for the crime of great rebellion. In modern times, I do not know that there is a second person.

Because the lawsuit took place in the Shanghai Concession, at that time, the Manchu Qing government had promised the Western powers the privileges of the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway, and extradited Zhang Taiyan and Zou Rong for 100,000 taels of silver, but under the pressure of public opinion, the Western powers said: "The concession matter should be handled in the concession." The cases of Zhang Taiyan and others were still tried by the triage offices of the great powers, and they were not extradited by the Qing court.

At that time, there were six people wanted by the Qing government: Cai Yuanpei, Zhang Taiyan, Zou Rong, Wu Zhihui, Chen Fan, and Zong Yang. When the others heard the news, they fled one after another, Cai Yuanpei took refuge in Qingdao, Wu Zhihui fled to Europe, Chen Fandong crossed to Japan, and Zong Yang hid in The Hartung Garden in Shanghai. But Zhang Taiyan did not go anywhere, this night, someone told him the news that the patrol had come to arrest people, Zhang Taiyan did not care, only said "small things disturbed", and then went back to the house to sleep. He also advised Zou Rong not to hide, saying: "There is no revolution that is bloodless. I was taken by the Qing government, and now it is the seventh time. The next day, when the foreign patrol was arrested by the Patriotic Society, Zhang Taiyan pointed to his nose and said to the patrol: "Zhang Binglin is me." Then he was happily arrested by the patrol. At that time, Zou Rong had successfully escaped through the back door, but Zhang Taiyan wrote a letter in prison to persuade him to turn himself in. Zou Rong could not bear the suffering of the eldest brother of Yiyi alone, and went to turn himself in the next day.

After Zhang Taiyan's arrest, there was an article in the Shanghai "News" mocking Zhang Taiyan for taking the initiative to send it to the door, "not to be foolish." After Zhang saw this article, he wrote an article entitled "Prison Answer News" and published it in the last issue of Su Bao. Zhang said in the text: In today's era, revolution must be carried out, and "my generation of scholars, who have not had the strength of the blade and the dagger, are imprisoned, determined to shed blood, and the sex is determined, and the upper can be the emperor and the queen of heaven and the earth, and the lower can be forty million people!" Finally, Zhang Taiyan taunted the reporter of the "News Daily", saying: "Rebuke the quail well frog, Anzu and Zhi Kunpeng Zhiya!" "Get out!" newspaperman. Please see 50 years later, the bronze statue standing majestically on the cloud surface is me? Or you? Sit back and wait, you don't need to say anything more! From then on, it was clear that Zhang Taiyan had the idea of killing Chengren at that time.

The Three Madmen of the Republic of China: A different master in the style of the Republic of China

In 1913, after the failure of the Second Revolution, the newly married Zhang Taiyan could not take care of his honeymoon, abandoned his newlywed wife, and ran from Shanghai to Beijing to find Yuan Shikai to settle accounts. Before leaving, his wife and friends all dissuaded him, but Zhang said, "Don't go into the tiger's den, but get the tiger." ”

It was winter, the weather was unusually cold, Zhang Taiyan pedaled a pair of torn cotton boots, wore a sheepskin jacket with oil and oil, a goose feather fan in his hand, and a large cloisonné medal hanging under the fan, straight into the presidential palace. The receptionist of the presidential palace asked him to show his business card, and he rolled his eyes and said loudly: "Who doesn't know, which one doesn't know, I am the 'Zhang Nerve' who has sat in The West Prison in Shanghai for three years!" He paced around the reception room patiently, seeing that Premier Xiong Xiling had talked, and vice minister Had talked to Rui Kun, Yuan Shikai did not see him, so he scolded: "Xiang Ruikun, a small child who has not dried up, can't I see it?" Saying that, he went straight inside, the guards stopped him, and the two sides immediately clashed. Zhang Taiyan picked up the vase on the table and threw it violently at the portrait of the great president.

After that, Zhang Taiyan was forcibly caught in the carriage by the guards, and that night, he could only spend the night at the gendarmerie instructor. He was full of anger and could not be dispelled, and he also named Yuan Shikai and angrily called Yuan Shikai a "thief of the country" and a "thief who steals the country" and "a thief who is a one-man thief." Repeated scolding all night, the guards guarding him were terrified, and quickly found cotton and plugged their ears.

There is also a version of Zhang Taiyan's entry into the presidential palace, and it is said that after Zhang Taiyan arrived at the presidential palace, he threw a business card that was one foot and five inches long, and only three big characters were written on it: Zhang Binglin. Yuan Shikai did not dare to see Zhang, but only sent his men out to prevaricate, and as a result, he was scolded back by Zhang Taiyan. In order to express his anger, Zhang Taiyan smashed the reception room of the presidential palace. Seeing that Zhang Taiyan was angry, Yuan was helpless and sent Lu Jianzhang, the head of the law enforcement department, to come. It is said that Lu Hard came out to see Zhang Taiyan with his scalp, bowed and said: "The president has a public demand, Mr. Lao has been waiting for a long time, I am deeply sorry!" I was sent today to welcome sir. Zhang Taiyan did not doubt that he was deceitful, so he followed Lu Jianzhang to the carriage, and was deceived all the way to a military abandoned school, and then moved to Longquan Temple.

The Three Madmen of the Republic of China: A different master in the style of the Republic of China

It is said that Zhang Taiyan was moved to Longquan Temple to be imprisoned, and Lu Jianzhang, who was so murderous and known as "Lu Butcher", personally rode in front of him to show respect, and people were surprised that they had never seen such a courtesy to a prisoner. When asked by Lu, Lu replied: If he can write a text for me, then I can use less than 100,000 soldiers and horses, and I will not respect it.

As soon as the news of Zhang Taiyan's arrest spread, the old man of the League went to the presidential palace to ease his cheeks: "President Yuan has 100,000 elite soldiers, so why should he be afraid of a scholar and not restore his freedom?" Yuan Shikai replied, "Tai Yan's writing can sweep through thousands of armies, and it is also a terrible thing!" In order to explain to public opinion, but it was not good to charge Zhang Taiyan, Yuan Shikai set a comical name of "madman is ill and forbidden" and imprisoned Zhang Taiyan.

The day after he moved to Longquan Temple, Yuan Kewen, the second son of Yuan Shikai, personally came to deliver brocade bedding, but did not dare to meet Zhang Taiyan, but only let people hand it over. Zhang Taiyan felt that someone was snooping outside the window slit, and when he took a look, it was Yuan Kewen, so he immediately went into the room and lit a cigarette, burning many caves on the futon, tired as a pearl, throwing it outdoors, saying: "Take it!" ”

Zhang Taiyan was placed under house arrest by Yuan Shikai at Longquan Temple, and Lu Jianzhang was responsible for his execution. Lu said that Yuan had hand-shown eight points of protection against Taiyan: eating and living, and not counting the amount of money used; preaching the scriptures and teachings, they could not help but copy them; destroying things and cursing people to listen to them, destroying things and buying them again; sending people to inspect them morning and evening, fearing accidents, and so on. Lu said to the people, "Mr. Taiyan is now Zheng Kangcheng. The Yellow Turban passed through Zheng Gongxiang and was still avoided. I am commanded by Ji Feng that no matter how obedient the gentleman's disposition is, I will respect and protect him; otherwise, it will not be as good as the yellow scarf. ”

After Zhang Taiyan was placed under house arrest, Yuan Shikai wanted to take Zhang's family to Beijing to live with Zhang, but Zhang thought it was a "trick", and Tang Guoli also suspected that Yuan had any conspiracy, and refused. Yuan Keding, the eldest son of Yuan Shikai, came to visit Zhang Taiyan and asked Zhang to live in his home, but Zhang Taiyan was silent and finally gave up.

Zhang Taiyan did not know about his house arrest at first. One day, when he was riding out to a banquet, the gendarmes also jumped on the car, in the shape of a front and rear guard, and when he returned after the banquet, the guard was the same. Zhang felt strange and asked Wu Zongci, but Wu did not tell the truth. The next day, he went to visit Hu Peide, who said to him, "This is a protector sent by Yuan Shikai." Zhang Wenyan was furious and grabbed his cane to beat the gendarmes to the head. Zhang Cai was in a good mood and said to Wu Zongci, "Yuan Dog was driven away by me!" "Wu Zongci can only be right. After the gendarmes were driven away by Zhang Taiyan, they came in civilian clothes and negotiated with Wu Zongci and Zhang Yanong, saying that they were under orders from above to protect Mr. Zhang, and although they angered Mr. Zhang, they still did not dare to be sloppy, so they came in yifu. Wu and Zhang were inconvenient to refuse, and could only agree not to let Zhang Taiyan know about the matter.

The Three Madmen of the Republic of China: A different master in the style of the Republic of China

In order to bribe Zhang Taiyan, Yuan Shikai sent Lu Jianzhang's secretary Qin mou to send money to Zhang. Qin Mou just took out the five hundred yuan in his arms and put it on the table, Zhang Taiyan stood up, threw the money into Qin Mou's face, and stared at Qing Qing and reprimanded: "Yuan Nu go quickly!" Qin Mou was frightened and fled.

Zhang Taiyan wrote to Yuan Shikai, asking Yuan to release him, but Yuan ignored him. After Li Yuanhong entered Beijing, Zhang sent a letter to Li. After Li received the letter, he knocked on Yuan's bedroom at night to ask for a meeting, and Yuan had fallen asleep and was not received. The next day, Li saw Yuan again and interceded for Zhang. Yuan then planned to give Zhang a fictitious post and prepare to order Zhang to be responsible for Kaowenyuan, but Zhang asked Yuan to allocate more than 200,000 yuan in start-up fees and let him hire famous people at home and abroad as professors, Yuan Shikai was only willing to give 150,000 yuan, and finally the two sides did not negotiate and gave up. Later, Zhang Taiyan's proud disciple Huang Kan went to Peking University to teach and came to accompany him, and Zhang Taiyan dictated the lecture notes of the "History of Chinese Literature", which was carefully sorted out by Huang Kan.

Zhang Taiyan said that the key reason for Yuan Shikai's failure was that he opposed three people with three people: first, Liang Rengong (Qi Chao) opposed Yang Haozi (度); second, Zhang Zhongren (Yi Lu) opposed Xia Wuyi; third, Lei Zhenchun opposed Cai Songpo (锷). This statement was widely circulated at the time.

On the evening of June 7, 1936, Zhang Taiyan obeyed the doctor's advice and went out for a walk with the support of his wife Tang Guoli, but unexpectedly passed out. Under the rescue of doctors, although Zhang Taiyan was out of danger, he has been bedridden ever since. Six days later, on the 13th, Zhang Taiyan suddenly had a high fever of 40 degrees. In the early morning of the next day, he spat out two pieces of rotten meat from his mouth, and his condition deteriorated again. At 7:45, Zhang Taiyan died of illness.

Zhang Taiyan with his family

Zhang Taiyan's last words read: "With a foreign race entering the Lord of The Middle Xia, the descendants of the world will not eat their official Lu." Huang Kan commented on Master Zhang Taiyan: "Literature and rhetoric, the collection of Qing Confucianism; the inner canon xuanyan, the elaboration of the legacy of the Jin and Tang Dynasties; the great Confucianism of the Bo synthesis and proficiency, the great Confucianism of the real life.

Huang Kan and Zhang Taiyan met in Japan. At that time, Huang Kan lived upstairs, and Zhang Taiyan lived downstairs. One night, Huang was in a hurry and could not go to the toilet, so he undid his pants from the window of the building. Zhang Taiyan was reading at night at this time, and a stream of fishy urine splashed down like a waterfall, and he couldn't help but shout angry scolding. Huang Kan was originally from a noble prince, and was young and impatient, domineering, and also scolded back. After the two sides exchanged names, they both knew each other's names, so they turned their words to learning, and the more they talked, the more speculative they became. Since then, Huang Kan has studied from Zhang Taiyan for many years. Zhang Taiyan was high and arrogant, and rarely praised the literati of the modern world, but only treated Huang Kan with admiration.

Huang Kan and Zhang Taiyan lived in Tokyo for more than three years, and have been immersed in hard reading, asking Zhang for advice from time to time. The funny thing is that he has been with Zhang for a long time, and he has never had the form of "worshiping the master", and Zhang is very surprised. When Huang Kan decided to return to China and asked Zhang for a parting gift, Mr. Taiyan said, "You have to worship a good teacher and always teach you." He asked who was good, and Tai Yan said, "Let's find Uncle Liu Shen (Liu Shipei) in Beijing." He replied, "I don't want to go to Beijing for the time being." Tai Yan said, "It is better to only talk about Sun Yirang." He replied, "I don't want to zhejiang." Tai Yan said, "Chen Botao is in Nanjing, you can go and find him." Answer: "I'm afraid I won't be able to go to Nanjing." Tai Yan said, "So what to do?" As a last resort, I'll force it! At this time, Huang Kancai prostrated his head seriously, and it was considered to be a worshipper. Since then, Huang Kan has been ranked on the door wall of Zhang Taiyan, and Zhang Taiyan has also been very excited about Huang's knowledge, and once boasted: "The speed of Hengyan's learning is as fast as traveling thousands of miles a day, and now Ru is also a day and a thousand miles." ”

Huang Kan

Around 1908, Chen Duxiu visited the Zhang's apartment of the Tokyo Minshi Newspaper, and Qian Xuantong and Huang Kan went to the next door to avoid it. When Chen and Zhang were chatting idly, talking about the development of Sinology in the Qing Dynasty, Chen Duxiu listed Dai, Duan, and Wang, most of whom were from Su Wan, and were quite proud of the Su Wan people. After the topic of mining turned to Hubei, saying that there were no university students in Hubei. Huang Kan, who was in the next room, suddenly jumped out and cross-examined: "Although there are no scholars in Hubei, this is not just a small area; although there are many scholars in Anhui, this may not be the foot." Chen Duxiu listened and went silently.

Huang Kan has always been blind to everything, and he sometimes criticizes his teacher Zhang Taiyan's scriptures, "Coarse! ”。

When Huang Kan was teaching at Peking University, he was very attached to Fu Sinian, Gu Jiegang and others, but later Fu and others turned against Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu's "New Youth" camp. According to Luo Jialun recalled: "After the "New Youth" came out, there were also many students who were affected, such as Fu Sinian and Gu Jiegang, who originally did a good job in Chinese poetry, and Huang Jigang and others also valued them in those years, but later they all changed, so Huang Jigang waited because they fell to the old school and hated them to the bone. Recently, Zhu Jiahua wanted to ask Fu Sinian to be the dean of literature at Central University, and Huang Jigang was about to resign. Therefore, Huang Kan went to Nanjing Central University to teach.

Wu Mei, a famous lyricist, is Huang Kan's colleague in the Department of Chinese Literature at Central University, and the two have a good relationship. Huang Kan invited Wu Mei to a crab feast one day. The two crab foot wine fans, can not help themselves, suddenly Wu Meiji argued that his reasoning is correct, Huang does not think it is OK. At this time, Gai was also drunk, so he slapped him, and Wu Mei also returned the salute. The two men jumped out of their seats instead, fighting each other and pulling away for their colleagues. After waking up drunk, the two reconciled as before.

The Three Madmen of the Republic of China: A different master in the style of the Republic of China

The Central University stipulates that teachers and students should wear the school emblem when entering and leaving the school gate, but Huang Kan does not wear it. When the doorman saw that the public did not wear the school badge and wanted to see his business card, he said, "I am the business card myself, you take me." "In the dispute, the principal came out to mediate and apologize.

Once, the class bell rang and students filled the classroom, waiting for the teacher to come to class. But Huang Kan sat in the faculty lounge without the slightest intention of getting up and going to the classroom. The student waited for a while, saw that the teacher had not arrived, and quickly reported to the Academic Affairs Office. The staff of the Academic Affairs Office knew that Huang Kanshi had a temper attack, and immediately ran to invite him to class, saying: "Class time is up, it is time to go to class." Who knew that Huang Kan looked at the sky with two eyes and said coldly: "The time has come, oh, the money has not yet arrived." It turned out that the school did not pay salaries in time, and Huang Kan expressed dissatisfaction. The Registrar's Office quickly collected his salary on his behalf before he went to the classroom.

On a rainy day, other professors wore rubber shoes to school, while Huang Kan wore a spiked shoe. "Spike shoes" are also known as "clogs", that is, cowhide after repeated oil immersion in tung oil is used as the upper, thick wood blocks are used as the sole, and then nailed with iron nails to prevent slip. These spikes are excellent for dirt roads in the countryside, but not on cement roads in the city. After class, when the sky was clear, Huang Kan changed into his shoes and carried the spikes out of the school with a newspaper bag. The new doorman did not know Huang Kan, and seeing that he was arrogant and carrying a bag of things, he went forward to interrogate him and check the paper bag. Huang put down the paper bag and left, and did not go to class for several days. The head of the department saw that Professor Huang had not arrived at the school for several consecutive days, thinking that he was sick, so he visited the door. Huang was silent, and the head of the department did not know why, and quickly reported to the principal. The principal personally came to the door and repeatedly inquired, and Huang Cai said: "The school is precious to the teacher, and even a pair of spiked shoes of the teacher must be checked, which is like a body search. Is it tolerable, or is it intolerable? The principal repeatedly apologized, and then entrusted many celebrities to persuade him, but to no avail. Since then, Huang Kan has been disconnected from Chuo University.

The private Chung Hua University hired Huang Kan as a professor at the school, and Huang Kan was a guy who took a dry salary and did not go to the school at all. The students went to the principal Chen Shi and quarreled, saying that the school schedule listed Mr. Huang Jigang's class, why did we not even see his figure this year? Didn't the school give him the money? If the school did not give him the money, it would have to refund our tuition, because it was the famous Mr. Huang Jigang who taught us, and we paid so much tuition. Chen Shi said, I am a few hundred yuan a month for him, where did not give money? There was no way for Chen Shi to go to Huang Jigang's house many times to do work and ask him to give lessons to the students. Huang Kan went to class and scolded, "What kind of animal are you?" Do you want me to come to class? When you go out, just throw my brand, just say that it is my student, or are you afraid that you will not have food to eat? See which one doesn't send you to do? That was the only class he took at Chung Hwa University.

While Huang Kan was in Nanjing, he met Dai Jitao, the president of the examination institute. Dai asked him, "What are some of the best works that sir has done lately?" Huang replied: "Editing the "Dark Anthology", your masterpiece has already been selected." The word "pitch black" here comes from the opposite meaning of "Zhaoming" in the "Selected Writings of Zhaoming", which means that Dai is not bright enough to do things for people on weekdays, and the irony is very obvious. Dai Jitao was overwhelmed and embarrassed for a moment and could not speak.

Huang Kan was arrogant and arrogant, and had scolded his colleagues all over Peking University before, and Cai Yuanpei, his disciple Qian Xuan and others did not let go. But he always treated Liu Shipei with courtesy. Why? He replied, "Because he has a deep friendship with Mr. Taiyan, the master." Zhang Taiyan, Liu Shipei, and Huang Kan often talked about learning together, but every time they talked about scripture, Liu Shipei was silent. Once, when Liu Shipei lamented that he did not have a successor, Huang Kan asked, "How about I come to be your closed disciple?" Liu Shipei thought that Huang Kan was just joking, so he said, "You have your own famous teacher, how can you bend each other?" Huang Kan said, "As long as you don't think I'm insulting the door wall, I'll perform the disciple ceremony." The next day, Huang Kan sealed ten oceans with red paper and went to the Liu family to prostrate himself to the teacher, and Liu Shipei did not give in, gladly saying: "I will no longer be humble today." Some people think that Huang's learning is above Liu's, and Huang Kan does not have to belittle his identity, Huang said: "The Three Rites are Liu's family studies, otherwise it is impossible to inherit the absolute learning, this so-called Existence of the Tao, the existence of the Master." ”

Liu Shipei

After liu shipei interacted with Chen Duxiu, Zhang Taiyan and others, he began to devote himself to the revolution. Immediately after the "Su Report" occurred, Liu Shipei wrote an anti-Qing monograph "Shu Shu", which was snapped up as soon as it was published. Qian Xuantong, who was studying in Suzhou at the time, went to great lengths to buy a copy, and halfway through reading it, he was excited, and immediately asked the shaver to cut his braids to show that "righteousness is not emperor Qin".

During the May Fourth period, Mr. Liu Shipei, an ancient scholar of Peking University, and Mr. Cui Shi, a modern scholar, lived opposite each other, were neighbors of each other, saw each other day and night, and every time they met, they were respectful and polite, calling each other Mr. A certain, accompanied by a bow; but after the class, it completely changed, because the two had different views on the academics, so they always attacked each other's absurdity in class, without mercy.

In 1917, Cai Yuanpei hired Liu Shipei to teach the history of classics at Peking University. Liu Shipei stuttered, and suffered from lung disease, he was untrimmed, unkempt, untidy, and looked like a madman. He did not bring books with him in class, nor did he send lecture notes, and when he stood on the stage, he thought of something and began to speak, his voice was weak, and he never wrote a board book. If it were not for the admiration of Peking University students for their knowledge, they would have been bombarded out of the door by Peking University students who have a tradition of catching up with professors.

When he came to Peking University to teach, although Liu Shipei was only 33 years old, he was sick and sick, and he looked weak and could not help the wind. Chen Duxiu is a long scholar of arts, and the two have been in contact for more than ten years, so they take photos of Liu Duo, and the wind and rain are allowed to be on leave as usual. Liu Shipei's calligraphy was poor, and he had the problem of hand shaking, and he never only lectured in the lecture hall, and did not write board books. Once, Chen Duxiu went to listen to the lecture, Liu Shipei was still the same, after a class, only wrote a "day" on the blackboard. At that time, Liu made a circle on the blackboard, adding a little in the middle. Chen Duxiu smiled at this.

Liu Shipei was afraid of the inside. One night, Liu Shipei rushed into Zhang Ji's house in a panic, and when he was breathing heavily, there was a sudden rush of knocking on the door outside. Only to see Liu Shipei's face turn pale, he said with a sigh, "It must be my wife who has come, what should I do?" I had to hide! After saying that, he rushed into the bedroom like lightning and quickly burrowed under the bed. After Zhang Ji opened the door, he found that it was a friend of his, so he went into the bedroom and asked Liu Shipei to come out. But Liu Shipei thought that Zhang Ji had deceived him and would not get out from under the bed no matter what. In the end, Zhang Ji had no choice but to lie down and pull him out of the bottom of the bed.

The Three Madmen of the Republic of China: A different master in the style of the Republic of China

Throughout his life, Liu Shipei advocated the "three noes lifestyle": do not clean clothes and shoes, do not wash your face, and do not cut your hair.

Liu Shipei has been "weak in voxels" since he was a child, "barren and beautiful like invincible clothes", he suffered from tuberculosis in his teens, coughed often in autumn and winter, and coughed often with blood. Liu Shipei is a good smoker, his addiction is very large, his books are often covered with soot, and his sleeves often have holes burned out of smoke. He likes to read while smoking, sometimes looking too intently, often inserting cigarette butts into ink cartridges by mistake.

However, Liu Shipei first betrayed the revolution and fell to the Qing court, and then helped Yuan Shikai to claim the title of emperor, which was disdainful of the people of the time.

After Liu Shipei defected, Huang Kan despised him very much. When Liu Shipei joined the "Preparatory Society" and advocated the imperial system for Yuan Shikai, he convened a meeting of well-known academic figures in Beijing to mobilize Huang Kan and others to support Yuan as emperor. Before Liu's words were finished, Huang Kan stood up and sternly refused: "If so, please sir!" "Say it and whisk your sleeves away." However, Liu Shipei stayed away from politics and went to Peking University to teach, and Huang Kan at Peking University gave Liu Shipei a disciple salute. Zhang Taiyan said in the "Huang Jigang Epitaph" written for Huang Kan: "Since The master pei attached the imperial system, he was absolutely absolute, but he emphasized that there was a law in the scriptures, and the master Pei was in urgent need of illness, and he also called him a disciple. ”

On November 20, 1919, Liu Shipei died in Beijing at the age of 36 due to tuberculosis and ineffective medicine. Before his death, he sent someone to call Huang Kan to the sickbed, "very hard to find a manuscript in the pillow box and hand it to Huang (Kan)'s hand", and instructed: "This is the phonological secret book that I have studied all my life, and I send it to you today as a parting commemoration, hoping that you will inherit it, and then pass it on to future generations." ”

After Liu Shipei's death, Huang Kan wrote "The Founding Text of the First Teacher Liu Jun XiaoxiangHui" to mourn the teacher: "I returned to Wuchang, and I did not have time to say goodbye. Once upon a time, it became a permanent recipe. I first heard the fierce letter, and I mourned with the teacher. ...... I was stuck in the capital, counted the number of people, admired the depth, changed from the north. Later, he wrote "Hearing Mr. Liu's Fierce Letter, Crying for the Position, And Expressing Sorrow with Poetry" also said: "Praying and apologizing, but hearing the letter and turning it over is suspicious." ”

When Huang Kan talked about Liu Shipei, a teacher who was only one year older than himself, he sighed infinitely: "It is really a genius, there are three geniuses in the Qing generation, all of whom died at the age of 36." In the former Qing Dynasty, there was Kong Guangsen, in the middle there was Dai Wang, and in the late Qing Dynasty there was Uncle Liu Shen. It's a pity. He also once commented on the teacher Liu Shipei: "Worrying about his years and years, slandering and future generations, the laughing stock of the people, can be deplored!" ”

For example, Zhang Liu Huang, three literati of the Republic of China, was born in the period of overthrowing the imperial system and moving towards the republic, these masters who learned to be rich and rich in five cars have experienced great changes that China has not encountered in three thousand years, and I don't know whether they were born at the right time or not, but the currents of their generation will not be blown away by the rain and the wind, and their afterglow is enough to reflect the current world.
