Google is recruiting talent to build an AR operating system for AR devices

According to the talent recruitment list compiled by 9to5Google, Google is recruiting a large number of AR talents, and the said AR operating system team aims to build "software components that control and manage the hardware of AR products."

The team is run by Mark Lucovsky, who just joined the company this week. It is worth mentioning that he has been with Meta/Oculus for four years, mainly as the director of operating systems involved in the development of Android alternatives. Lukovsky, meanwhile, spent 16 years at Microsoft (helping to develop the Windows NT operating system) before working for Google from 2004 to 2009.

Describing the team's goals, Google noted: "Our team is building software components that control and manage the hardware of augmented reality (AR) products. As Google adds new products to the AR portfolio, the OS team will be the first software team to use the new hardware. ”

Requirements for multiple positions include "understanding the Linux kernel and driver model" and "having experience developing a real-time operating system (RTOS)."

A job posting for a senior software engineer for cameras said: "Google is building an 'innovative AR device.'" As part of the team, you'll be responsible for innovating the camera component software for AR devices. ”

Another job posting for the senior head of software development technology reads, "You'll lead the design and development of an input framework for an embedded real-time platform that will lay the foundation for the next generation of AR experiences." We're committed to helping billions of people access immersive computing with mobile devices. For this role, you will be responsible for building and optimizing the underlying software of our products. ”

While most of the positions are based in the United States, others involve the eastern Canadian city of Waterloo, which is the headquarters of North, an AR eyewear maker that Google acquired in 2020.

In fact, this is far from Google's first attempt at AR software, with earlier projects including ARCore for Android and Tango.
