In the seventh year of Zhenguan, all three hundred and ninety death row prisoners in the world in the past year, no one was supervised, all of them were self-proclaimed as scheduled, and none of them died; all of them were forgiven. However, Tang Taizong did not want such a thing to happen, so he felt pity and ordered these death row prisoners to return home to visit their relatives for a year, but after the autumn of the following year, he would take the initiative to come back and behead them.
At his will, 309 death row inmates knelt down in thanksgiving and then thankfully left. This is undoubtedly an excellent opportunity for this death row prisoner to escape, and the people of the world also feel that Tang Taizong is letting the tiger return to the mountain. But what is unexpected is that after the autumn of the following year, many of these 309 death row inmates have returned. Such a situation shocked the entire people of Chang'an City at that time, and even Tang Taizong was overwhelmed with emotion, such a good chance to escape, but he still chose to come back to show that his conscience had not yet been completely destroyed.
Looking at the situation in front of him, Tang Taizong made a very surprising decision, he forgave all the sins of these people, and told them to change their lives in the future and never to do evil or harm others again. Hearing this, not only the death row prisoners, but also the people and officials present knelt down to give thanks. Only after that was there a record of this story in the Zizhi Tongjian.
