Explain why China's voice is in the hands of the West? Expert: This phenomenon should not continue

On December 7th, the Symposium on the Publication of "Introduction to World Chinese Studies" was held at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. Xu Jiong, deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Shanghai Municipal CPC Committee, Wang Weisong, secretary of the party committee of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and Wang Weisong, secretary of the party leading group of the Shanghai Federation of Social Sciences, delivered speeches respectively.

Xu Jiong pointed out that China and the world, the world and China have never been so deeply intertwined as they are today, and this interweaving has made overseas China studies show two more and more obvious trends. First, more and more countries and their scholars are involved in China studies, in addition to Japan, France, Russia, the United States and other traditional overseas China research centers, originally regarded as the "deserted village" of Chinese studies, Asian, African and Latin American countries have also begun to study China and understand China, and China studies have increasingly shown their universality. Second, the breadth and depth of Sinology research has been continuously expanded, and it is no longer limited to the traditional study of Chinese Chinese literature and history, nor is it limited to the study of modern and contemporary Chinese history. Many scholars have begun to turn their attention and thinking to the observation and research of political, economic, cultural, ethnic, linguistic, community communities, marriage and family, and psychology in contemporary China, and even scholars who have not turned to it are committed to opening up new research areas. This shift reflects the international community's great concern about the remarkable growth miracle that China has created since its reform and opening up, and also provides a deep and enlightening perspective on domestic research. In this sense, the publication of "Introduction to World Chinese Studies" can be said to be opportune.

Explain why China's voice is in the hands of the West? Expert: This phenomenon should not continue

Wang Zhan, the first author of "Introduction to World Chinese Studies" and chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Federation of Social Societies, introduced the background and main ideas of the book. Speaking of the original intention of writing the book, Wang Zhan said that it was because of a "stimulus": "At the Sixth World Forum on Chinese Studies, Tan Zhong, a scholar of Chinese Descent in India, raised a question: Why don't overseas Chinese studies read Chinese books? All conclusive things about the Chinese question are mentioned by Westerners, Chinese is not worth mentioning in the whole sinology and overseas Sinology. The 'Tan Zhongzhi Question' stimulated me a lot. According to Wang Zhan, the book consists of seven chapters, which attempt to explore seven "mysteries" by answering Tan Zhong's questions, Toynbee's questions, and Needham's questions: the mystery of explaining China's discourse power, the mystery of the inheritance of Chinese civilization, the mystery of the great divergence of history, the mystery of Kang's long cycle, the mystery of socialism, the mystery of the Chinese road, the mystery of the Inheritance of the Silk Road and contemporary development.

Weighing the arguments, the issues mentioned in the book are "questions of the world." By answering these questions, it provides a very important foundation for our understanding of how to construct world Chinese studies or overseas Chinese studies, and makes a very important development. He believes that the book has the following characteristics: First, it upholds the new liberal arts spirit of interdisciplinarity, internal and external, and throughout the East and the West. Second, it embodies the spirit of dialogue among equal civilizations. "China's relationship with the outside world, in the past, this topic was dominated by Westerners. Now Chinese can not only speak, but also talk on an equal footing, which sets a good precedent. "Third, it embodies a pioneering study of how to build the discipline of World Sinology." What is World Chinese Studies? It is neither equivalent to traditional sinology nor intersects with existing disciplines. How to build a world discipline system of Chinese studies is an urgent problem to be solved.

The discipline of world Sinology is completely new, but the origins of this discipline can be traced back hundreds of years. So, how is the book "Introduction to World Chinese Studies" different from other books? Researcher Huang Renwei, former vice president of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, believes that the biggest feature of the book is to highlight the contemporaneity of Chinese studies. "Early Sinology actually studied China at that time. Later, The study of Sinology in the United States mainly studied China during the Cold War. The study of Sinology in the United States and Europe controls the construction of the entire theoretical image of China. In such a language environment, China's image is shaped by others, and China's truth is that others are speaking, Chinese but they have no right to speak. This phenomenon of Western domination of Chinese studies should not continue. "He said that Sinology is the basic research of contemporary China studies and the basic source of contemporary Chinese image." The contemporaneity of Sinology should be integrated with the historical nature of Chinese studies, with the cosmopolitan nature of Chinese studies, and with the regularity of China's development. If these three are combined, Chinese studies will open up a new commanding height for China's discourse power in the world. ”

Researcher Tang Lei, deputy director and secretary general of the International Research Center for Chinese Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that the highlight of the book "Introduction to World Chinese Studies" is that it guides students to strengthen their awareness of the problems of Chinese studies in the way of answering questions and the way they enter. At the same time, such a problem-oriented approach can also absorb the thinking, achievements, and viewpoints of Chinese and foreign scholars to form a rational dialogue, which is exactly what the world's Chinese studies need to do, and it is also a very valuable attempt for us to tell the Story of China in an academic way.

Wu Xinbo, director of the Institute of Chinese Studies at Shanghai University of Foreign Chinese, believes that the advent of "Introduction to World Chinese Studies" is of breakthrough significance to the construction of Chinese studies disciplines. It has greatly enriched the concept of Sinology, making It both local connotations and world extensions. At the same time, the book is not simply a grand narrative of the Chinese story or a simple introduction and sorting out of the world's China issues, but a two-way interaction in the form of questions and answers. It is very important to tell the Chinese story well, and more importantly, it is to tell the truth of China clearly. The book revolves around seven "mysteries" and dialogues with a global dimension, telling stories and making sense, and all of them are big truths. The more clearly these great truths are explained, the more vivid the Story of China will be told, the more profound the world's understanding of China will be, and the closer and more harmonious the relationship between China and the world will become.

The conference was hosted by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and the Shanghai Municipal Federation of Social Societies, and hosted by the Institute of World Chinese Studies of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Press, and the Shanghai International Economic Exchange Center.
