Cade Cunningham, the 2021 NBA draft pick, has slowly gotten into his form after a slow start. The young point guard has gradually had a lot of great performances, averaging 17.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the last 10 games, while his three-point shooting rate has reached 40.6% during this time.
Pistons legend Dave Binn recently commented on Cunningham. Bin claimed Cunningham would be an "All-Star level player" but didn't think he was a "guy you could build around him."
I think he's already starting to get into his own way now. We were worried about his shots early on, but he played really well all the time. So I think he's going to be an All-Star level player, but I don't think he's a cornerstone player that you need to build around him... We still need to get that person, and in my opinion, we don't have that ability yet. I also think our weakness is the backcourt and we have to get a good point guard.
All number one draft picks are generally expected to be All-Star level players, and Cade Cunningham's recent performances are undoubtedly a sign that he can reach that level in the future. Some compared him to Brandon Roy. While many do expect Cunningham to eventually overtake All-Star and become a superstar, Dave-Bin doesn't seem to value him as much as anyone else.
The Detroit Pistons now have a solid young core, and while they don't have much to win at the moment, they should be able to win more games after they've developed some players. Hopefully we'll see Cunningham reach his potential and he seems to be moving in that direction.
