At noon on Wednesday, the New York State Police received a report that a car was close to the Niagara River on the edge of the United States in Niagara Falls, and witnesses said there was a female passenger in the car.

According to ABC7, police said the New York State Police Water Rescue Team was unable to rescue the vehicle due to its location, and the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched.

The car was driven by a local woman in her 60s, according to police, who said the car was about 50 yards from the edge of the waterfall. An investigation into how the car entered the river is ongoing.

The woman was subsequently pronounced dead with no other passengers in the car.

The state police will work with other partners to determine how to safely remove the vehicle from the river.
