China Spallation Neutron Source is the fourth in the world, the first pulsed spallation neutron source in China, and the first large scientific device built by China in South China. Looking at the whole country, large scientific installations are either built in municipalities such as Beijing and Shanghai, or in provincial capitals such as Hefei. Fast forward to February 2006, at a seminar held by the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, Chen Hesheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, particle physicist, and later the commander-in-chief of China's spallation neutron source project, mentioned that China's spallation neutron source was looking for a suitable construction site. The speaker was unintentional, the listener was intentional, and the relevant person in charge of the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission immediately reported to the main leaders of Guangdong Province at the time, hoping to strive to bring the China Spallation Neutron Source Project to Guangdong.

In March of that year, the main leaders of Guangdong Province and the Chinese Academy of Sciences believed that the source of Chinese spallation neutrons could be settled in the Pearl River Delta after in-depth docking. Two months later, the team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences went to three places in the Pearl River Delta recommended by the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission to conduct field investigations, and finally chose Dongguan.

On the one hand, the Chinese Academy of Sciences hopes to combine the strong strength in basic scientific research, applied basic research and high-tech research and development with the strong economic strength of the Pearl River Delta region to promote the southern provinces to carry out basic science and applied scientific research on large scientific devices, improve the level of technological research and development, and promote economic transformation; on the other hand, Dongguan's thick economic and industrial foundation, the city's desire for transformation and upgrading, and scientific and technological innovation have also become the main reasons why Dongguan stands out among many competitive cities.

In fact, Dongguan, which started with "three to one supplement", has long realized the importance of scientific and technological elements. However, compared with beijing, Shanghai and other first-tier cities with many colleges and universities, Dongguan's scientific research resource base is scarce, and there are natural shortcomings in scientific and technological innovation. This requires that Dongguan must use extraordinary means to promote the introduction, agglomeration and transformation of scientific and technological resources. This endogenous sense of urgency for scientific and technological innovation eventually ushered in the landing of China's spallation neutron source.

From the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission in September 2008, to the foundation laying of the project in October 2011, to the success of the first target shooting in August 2017, until the national acceptance in August 2018, after ten years of tempering, a national heavy instrument was born in Songshan Lake. The project construction involves a large number of advanced technologies, overcomes many technical problems, and the localization rate of equipment exceeds 90%. The experts of the acceptance committee evaluated that the indicators of China's spallation neutron source have reached or exceeded the approved acceptance indicators, the overall design of the device is advanced, the quality of the development equipment is excellent, and the maximum neutron efficiency of the target station and the comprehensive performance of the 3 spectrometers have reached the international advanced level.

With the settlement of the China Spallation Neutron Source Project in Songshan Lake, the scientific research team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has also lived in Songshan Lake for more than ten years. They have witnessed the changes in Songshan Lake, witnessing the environment of Songshan Lake getting better and better, and its popularity is getting stronger and stronger. Songshan Lake has become their second hometown. Chen Yanwei, deputy director of the Institute of High Energy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Dongguan Research Department, was one of the earliest participants in the project.

Feng Ji, general secretary and deputy director of the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, who had participated in the site selection process of China's spallation neutron source, said that Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at that time, had a special opinion that the landing of China's spallation neutron source should take into account the layout of the national large scientific device, the development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and even the long-term problems such as radiation to Southeast Asia.

Chen Yanwei introduced that as of now, there are more than 2600 registered users of spallation neutron source, and more than 600 projects from many colleges and universities, research institutes and enterprises around the world have been completed, covering many application fields such as new hydrogen storage materials, lithium-ion batteries, new superconducting materials, high-strength steel, solar cell thin films, etc., and have achieved important results.

In addition to the second phase of China's spallation neutron source project, Songshan Lake is actively planning to lay out a number of new large scientific devices such as advanced atassecond laser facilities.

The advanced atassecond laser facility is a light source device based on the interaction of high-power femtosecond lasers with matter to produce atassecond lasers and high-energy photons, which will provide new research methods for physics, chemistry, materials and biomedicine, promote breakthroughs in basic theories in these fields, and trigger a new round of technological revolution.

The successive drops of large-scale heavy equipment mark the acceleration of songshan lake science city from a single large scientific device to a large scientific device cluster, which will drive more high-end innovation elements to gather in songshan lake science city.
