"Sending Nostalgia" [Tang Dynasty] Du Mu

Creative background
This is a work reminiscing about the Yangzhou years. In 833-835 (emperor Wenzong's reign 7th to 9th year), Du Mu served as an official in the shogunate of Huainan Jiedushi, and became the secretary of The Prefecture. He was thirty-one or two years old at the time, and he was quite good at feasting. From this poem, he has many contacts with the women of Yangzhou Qinglou, poetry and wine, and wandering skeletons. Therefore, the future remembrance is like a dream, and nothing has been accomplished. This is a poem in which the poet laments that life is self-inflicted, not a poem of game life, frivolous decadence, and vulgar debauchery as discussed in some literary histories. "Tang Dynasty Absolute Sentence Essence" Yun: "Talented people must not see the meaning of the times, issued this poem, read but see its arrogant and uneven state." Du Mu's poetry is called heroic, but it is also said that he is not dirty and small, that is, such poems can be seen in their summary. ”

The first two sentences of the poem are memories of life in Yangzhou in the past: the rivers and lakes were swept down, accompanied by wine; the Qin Lou Chu Pavilion, the beautiful woman Jiaowa, lived a romantic life of a wandering skeleton. "Chu waist slender palm light", using two allusions. Chu waist refers to the thin waist of a beautiful person. "The king of Chu Ling has a thin waist, but there are many hungry people in the country" (Han Feizi Er shan). Light in the palm of the hand refers to The Empress Zhao Feiyan of the Hancheng Emperor, "light in body, able to dance for the palm" (see "The Tale of Fei Yan"). Literally, the two allusions are both praises for the beauty of the prostitutes in the state, but a closer look at the word "downfall" shows that the poet is very dissatisfied with his situation of sinking into the subordinates and sending people to the fence, so he does not have a pleasant feeling about the recollection of his former debauchery.
"Ten years of a dream of Yangzhou", this is a sigh from the poet's heart, it seems to be very abrupt, but in fact it is consistent with the above two poetic meanings. "Ten years" and "one sleep" are opposite in one sentence, giving people a sharp sense of contrast between "long time" and "extremely fast", which shows the depth of the poet's emotional emotions. And this sentiment is completely attributed to the "dream" of the "Yangzhou Dream": the libertine skeleton of the past, indulging in wine; the prosperity and bustle on the surface, the boredom and depression in the bones, the painful memories, and the sentimentality after awakening. This is the "nostalgia" of the poet. Suddenly, ten years have passed, and the past of Yangzhou is just a big dream.
"Win the name of Qinglou Bo Xing" - in the end, even the Qinglou he once had a crush on blamed himself for his own bo feelings. The word "win" contains bitterness, self-deprecation and remorse in the ridicule. This is a further denial of the "Yangzhou Dream", but it is written so seemingly relaxed and witty, in fact, the poet's spirit is very depressed. Ten years, in a person's life can not be considered short, but he has achieved nothing, leaving nothing behind. This is a poem that is revealed with pain, and it is not possible to understand the poet's unspoken emotions without repeating it.
The predecessors said that "most of them are mainly based on the third sentence, and the fourth sentence is sent" (Hu Zhenheng's "Tang Yin Deco"), Du Mu's absolute sentence can be described as deeply mysterious. This song uses the method of remembrance to start, the first two sentences are narrative, and the last two sentences are lyrical. Although the third and fourth sentences are the original meaning of "remembrance", the first sentence "Falling into the rivers and lakes carrying wine" is the reason for the nostalgia and cannot be gently let go. Previous commentators commented that this poem was completely focused on the author's "prosperous dream awakening, repentance and erotic travel", which is incomplete. The poet's "Yangzhou Dream" life is related to his political unambitiousness. Therefore, this poem, in addition to the accident of repentance, has a trance like a dream, and it is impossible to look back.
