On August 24, 1937, the Japanese bombed Nanjing, just in time to blow up the wall of Tiger Bridge Prison, and Shi Yafu took the opportunity to escape from the prison. After being released from prison, Shi Yafu crossed the river and returned to his hometown in Nantong, and in order to avoid the entanglement of Kuomintang agents, he changed his name to Shi Yafu, which means to do what an Asian man should do.
In March 1938, the Japanese army landed in Nantong, and Shi Yafu used his local influence to organize a team of people to form the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Soil Guard Regiment, which connected with the local party organization. After the Japanese occupied Nantong, the Kuomintang officials withdrew, and the workers' and peasants' soil guard regiment commanded by Shi Yafu at that time had no weapons and equipment, and learned that there was a platoon of defeated soldiers in a village near Tangzha, who were going door to door searching for plainclothes and preparing to escape.
