Japan's Ministry of Defense has released the latest developments on the activities of Russian warships around Japan. Japan's Ministry of Defense said it had spotted a Russian warship formation sailing through the Miyako Strait on Nov. 23, and then on Nov. 27 that the formation had passed through the Tsushima Strait. Japan's Ministry of Defense claimed that the Japanese Self-Defense Forces had dispatched a large number of ships and aircraft to monitor Russian warships.

On November 30, the Japanese Ministry of Defense's Unified Staff Supervision Department announced that the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces had spotted five Russian naval vessels sailing northeastwards about 170 kilometers south of Iriomote Island (yaeyama islands of the Ryukyu Islands) at about 4 p.m. on November 23.

The Russian naval fleet consisted of 2 improved Kilo-class submarines, the Roar guided missile frigate, and a supply ship and a rescue ship. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces confirmed that these Russian warships were sailing north in the waters between Okinawa and Miyako Island (Miyako Strait).

Japan's Ministry of Defense said the Japanese Self-Defense Forces then discovered the Russian warship formation in the Tsushima Strait on Nov. 27, when they were sailing northeast along the Tsushima Strait into the Sea of Japan.

Japan's Ministry of Defense said that the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force dispatched a P-1 patrol aircraft, a P-3C patrol aircraft, the destroyer "Seto Mist", the "Kawauchi" frigate, as well as a minesweeper and a guided missile boat to collect intelligence and monitor the Russian warships.
