Ba Jin (1904-2005), formerly known as Li Yaotang (李尧棠), was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. In 1923, he went to Shanghai, Nanjing and other places to study, and engaged in social activities and compilation work. In 1927, he went to Paris, France to study. After returning to Shanghai at the end of 1928, he engaged in literary creation. He was the editor-in-chief of Cultural Life Publishing House. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the editor-in-chief of Literature and Art Monthly, Harvest, and Shanghai Literature, the chairman of the China Writers Association, the vice chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and a member of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress. In 2003, he was awarded the honorary title of "People's Writer" by the State Council.

His representative works include the novella "Home", the novella "The Garden" and the essay collection "Caprice".
