Born on February 13, 1919, Zhang Fa is a native of Harbin, Heilongjiang, whose ancestral home is Penglai, Shandong, and whose original name is Zhang Damin. When he was 7 years old, his father died, and he followed his mother to leave his hometown first for Beijing and then shanghai.
In 1940, at the age of 21, Zhang Fa was admitted to the Shanghai Huaguang Drama College to study acting, and at that time, among more than 200 candidates, only he and Huang Zongjiang were admitted. After graduation, he joined the Shanghai Drama Art Company and, in 1947, joined the Shanghai Wenhua Film Company.
With the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the development of films, Zhang Fa and a large number of drama actors began to go to the big screen, and the first film he participated in was "The Scenery of the Troubled World" directed by Wu Lingzhi in 1941 and starring Shi Hui and Han Fei.
In the 1940s, Zhang Fa, who was fresh and handsome and personable, starred in more than ten movies, mainly including "Long Live the Wife", "Mother and Son", "Nightclub", "Cliff Horse", "Pingbu Qingyun", "Streets and Alleys", "Chickens Chirping early to see the sky", "Welcoming Spring", etc. He was once known as a "hard school student".
After the founding of New China, Zhang Fa entered the Shanghai Film Studio. In the 1970s and 1980s, Zhang Fa participated in nearly 20 films, such as "Journey", "Pingying Tomb", "After the Blue Light Flashed", "Midnight", "Meet Again after Twenty Years", "Dripping Guanyin", and the last film he participated in in his life was "Eighty-Four and Eighty-Five Years of T Province".
