Prince Gong Yi

Compared with the arrogance, ignorance, greed, and incompetence of other imperial families and important subjects in the late Qing Dynasty, Prince Gong Yishi, who had real talent, outstanding ability, quite ideals, and unusually sober, was undoubtedly a bright spot on the political stage of the late Qing Dynasty.

Ding Yunliang, an American missionary and later the first president of Peking University, had a lot of contact with Yi Bi because of the Foreign Affairs Movement, and had a very good impression of him. Ding Yunliang once mentioned that the star of Prince Gong's destiny rose in the dark storm, and with his extraordinary wisdom and courage, he stepped forward more than once at the critical moment of the royal family's crisis, and the embarrassing situation further set off Prince Gong's honor and composure. Ding Yunliang wrote in another reference to Yi Bi: Prince Gong is humble, and it is he who can unite a large number of cadres and continue to maintain the operation of the government in difficult times. Every time we met, he always held my hands affectionately, which was in stark contrast to the indifferent attitude of the Han people when they greeted me. Even if the Han people are my close friends, they only give their hands to each other when they meet, and they respect each other.

During the Second Opium War, the British Plenipotentiary Envoy to Sign the Treaty of Beijing, Erkin, wrote in his memoirs that even under the enormous pressure of signing the alliance under the city, Prince Gong was always calm and courteous, which made him very impressed.

In 1879, the former president of the United States, General Grant, the hero of the American Civil War, visited the Qing Dynasty, which was the first visit to China by a Leader of a Western Country. The famous journalist who visited with Grant, the future minister to China, Yang John, wrote in his diary: "Prince Gong is different from the princes and politicians of the East that I have seen before, he is very vivid, he is a man with a keen intuition and a firm will.

But it is such an outstanding prince, luck always seems to be a little bit worse, always in the embarrassing position of "the second oldest", empty of a skill but can not make it.

The Daoguang Emperor was embarrassed when considering an heir, because he was very fond of both his fourth son Yixuan and his sixth son Yishi, and he was always undecided about which one to choose as his successor (the daoguang Emperor's adult sons were only two of them, and the others were still young). Yi Bi was talented and talented since childhood, and his teacher was Da Ru Weng Xin Cun (Weng Tonggong's father), and under strict education, he learned martial arts well. If according to the tradition of the Qing Dynasty, the combination of political integrity and ability is used as a condition for selecting heirs, of course, Yi Bi is the most suitable.

Yikes

Yi Xi's mother was the empress of the Daoguang Emperor, but she died early and was raised by Yi Bi's mother. He was weak, injured in his early years due to a fall on horseback, and his body was somewhat disabled, so he could not learn as much as his younger brother Yi Bi. But he had a good teacher, Du Shoutian, who played a decisive role in his eventual becoming crown prince. Du Shoutian asked Yixuan to work the word renxiao, because this is what is strongly advocated in traditional Chinese culture, and it is also the quality that the Daoguang Emperor cares about most.

One spring, the Daoguang Emperor took the princes to hunt, YiXuan deliberately did not release an arrow, the Daoguang Emperor asked Yixuan the reason, Yixuan replied: Shi Fangchun, birds and beasts breeding, can not bear to hurt the life to dry Tianhe. This answer made the Daoguang Emperor very satisfied, so he praised: This is the words of the True Emperor. So in his heart, he decided to make Yixuan the crown prince. And Yi Bi thought that this was the best time to show his ability to his father, so he fought a lot of prey, but instead became the contrast of Yi Xi's kindness. It's also a bad thing that the ability is not used at the right time. When the Daoguang Emperor was seriously ill, Yi Xi cried bitterly every time he saw Daoguang, showing great sadness at his father's illness. This made the Daoguang Emperor think of Yi Xuan as filial piety even more, so he was eventually determined to be the successor.

Yi Bi thought that the throne must be his own, but he did not expect an accident, and naturally he was not willing. Yi Xuan succeeded to the throne as the Xianfeng Emperor. XianFeng was naturally uneasy about this younger brother who was competing with him for the throne and had outstanding ability, and adopted a strategy of both reuse and suppression. Dirty work is done by Yi Bi, but the reward is very small, and he often has to beat and blame. In the Second Opium War, the Anglo-French coalition army attacked Beijing, and the Xianfeng Emperor ran away with his wife and children, leaving a mess for Yi Bi to be responsible, and some people said that Xian Feng used the hands of foreigners to kill Yi Bi. Before dying, Xian Feng was still worried about Yi Bi, and the minister of Gu Order not only did not have him, but also dismissed him from his post as minister of military aircraft, completely chilling Yi Bi's heart.

Completely chilled, Yi Bi accepted the olive branch of Ci'an Cixi and jointly launched the Xin You coup. After the success of the coup, he served as the king of parliament, the minister of military aircraft, and the head of the prime minister. At that time, the world believed that Yi Bi and Cixi's uncle and sister-in-law ruled the Qing Dynasty together. Yi Bi also thought that she had been suppressed for too long, and it was time to raise her eyebrows and breathe. However, Cixi, who had stood firm, was still uneasy about Yi Bi, and in 1865, he was disrespectful on the call and struck Yi Bi fiercely for a while, which made him very embarrassed. Later, in 1874, yi bi objected to the restoration of the Yuanmingyuan, and as revenge, Cixi once again attacked Yi Bi, and Yi Bi's power completely collapsed.

As an emperor's son, an emperor's younger brother, and an emperor's uncle, Yi Bi was always in the awkward position of "second oldest", walking on thin ice all day. Yi Bi can't do things without doing things: not doing things is having emotions; doing things badly can't do: don't you let the leader criticize a few words if you don't do well? Can't do more things: Show that you can, the leaders are not as good as you, you want to seize power? It is not okay to do less: Daqing is our love for the New Jue Luo family, what do you mean by not doing well, or do you have opinions about the leadership?

Ding Yunliang wrote: Prince Gong's eyebrows are revealed because of the vicissitudes of his age, is it because of the burden of the empire, or because of the embarrassing position?
