New faces at WLF: Thomas Cech, 1989 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry

The 4th World Top Scientists Forum (WLF) is just around the corner. This year's WLF will feature nearly thirty top scientists attending for the first time. The WLF public account will introduce them one by one, and today's appearance is the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner Thomas Cech.

New faces at WLF: Thomas Cech, 1989 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry

Thomas Cech was awarded the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for "discovering the catalytic properties of RNA."

Thomas Cech is an American biochemist and professor of biochemistry at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Major Academic Achievements: Thomas Cech's study of the transcription of nuclei, the structure and function of telomeres, the natural end of linear chromosomes. He also studies how the genetic code of DNA is transcribed into RNA, the processing and reaction of RNA, and especially the catalysis of ribosomal RNA for protein synthesis. RNASes, known as ribozymes, provide new tools for genetic technology. They also have the potential to offer new therapeutic drugs that have the ability to destroy and aggressively cut viral RNA.
