Born on June 20, 1925, in a small village in Texas, Audi Murphy's father was so incompetent that he abandoned his wife and children, and Murphy had to drop out of school to work in the fifth grade. At this stage Murphy learned to use rifles to hunt to support his family, and after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Murphy decided to join the army, but the army rejected Murphy because he was still underage and not enough weight, and eventually Murphy joined the U.S. Army by gaining weight and forging birth certificates.

In early 1944 the 3rd Infantry Division took part in the unsuccessful First Battle of Sistner, the most difficult battle Murphy had experienced since joining the army. Three days after entering the battle, Murphy's B Company had fewer than 30 soldiers left to continue fighting, and on March 2, Murphy found a tank abandoned by the Germans, and Murphy braved artillery fire to destroy the tank with a gun grenade and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Murphy then captured some German prisoners during a combat patrol, but he himself contracted malaria and went to a field hospital.

Murphy returned on 14 January 1945, as the 3rd Infantry Division prepared to clear the Germans in Colmar's pockets, an area held by the Germans that prevented the Allies from crossing the Rhine. On 25 January, the 3rd Infantry Division encountered stubborn German resistance, Murphy was forced to shell both legs, his B Company was reduced from 225 to 18, completely incapacitated, Murphy was appointed as the acting company commander as the only officer. After the war, Murphy served in the National Guard and began acting in films from 1948 to 1969, when he had made more than 40 feature films and a television series.
