"On the Cliff" was released on April 30 this year, with a cumulative box office of about 1.190 billion yuan, the highest-grossing one in Zhang Yimou's works.
The film tells the story of four Communist agents who had received special training in the Soviet Union during the War of Resistance Against Japan, formed a task force and returned to China to carry out a secret operation code-named "Utra". Because of the betrayal of the traitors, from the first moment of parachuting and landing, they were already in the net laid by the enemy. Whether comrades can get out, whether the task can be completed, the snow keeps falling, and the action group standing on the "cliff" is facing a severe test.
This is the fourth time that Zhang Yimou's directing work has represented Chinese mainland to the Academy Award for Best International Film (formerly known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award). In 1991, Ju Dou became the first Chinese film to be nominated for an Oscar, and the film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or in the main competition unit of the 43rd Cannes Film Festival; in 1992, "Hanging High with a Red Lantern" was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming the second Chinese film after "Ju Dou" to be nominated for the award, and the film was also nominated for the 48th Venice Film Golden Lion Awards and won the Best Non-English Film Award at the 46th British Academy Film Awards. In 2003, the martial arts film Hero was nominated for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
It is reported that the 94th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on February 27, 2022.
