In the field of buying wine, there are also blue chips, potential stocks, and junk stocks. The famous blue-chip stocks in the whisky circle have Macallan in Scotland and Yamazaki in Japan. They are the most famous, excellent sales performance, better flavor, active trading in the second-hand market; also because of the above advantages, their initial price is also high, the short-term appreciation space is not large, suitable for long-term holding.
During this time, the wine lovers who previously held Yamazaki for a long time had to earn it. Recently, grandmaster whisky critic Jim Murray, in his annually updated Whisky Bible 2015, rated The Single Malt Whisky for Yamazaki's 2013 Sherry Barrel Special Edition whisky with a high score of 97.5, overpowering all Scottish products and causing a big uproar. Suddenly, the price of this niche product "Luoyang Paper Expensive", which was not high in shipments, rose directly from more than 3,000 yuan to more than 20,000 yuan in the second-hand market, but it was still difficult to find a drink; it also led to the bullish market of other series of products in Yamazaki.
Subsequently, in The Whisky Bible 2017, Yamazaki's 2016 Sherry Barrel Special Edition Whisky received another high score and won the "Best Single Malt Whisky in Japan" award. Under the hot market of Japanese whisky, another handful of firewood has been added.
On the other hand, the official retirement of Yumizu Seiichi, the previous chief brewer of the Suntory Group to which Yamazaki belongs, also contributed to the rise in its prices in November 2014. Every time I travel to Japan in recent years, I have found that most of the Yamazaki whiskies in many supermarkets and liquor stores have been sold out, products aged 18 years or more, special editions aged in single barrels are rare, a small number of entry-level 1 yearless products (NAS) are also very popular, and each person is limited to one bottle; in the duty-free shops of Kansai International Airport, most of the products of "Yamazaki", "Baizhou" and "Xiang (響)" are also sold out, and only a few of the yearless products with no collectible value are left.
Such a grand occasion makes people both happy for Yamazaki and worried about their own purses - seeing that the price has to rise again. Don't have a pang of missing the opportunity to cut the bottom: why didn't you buy more bottles a few years ago when the supply was still sufficient? It can be seen that the most expensive of the regular products, Yamazaki, rose from 100,000 yen to 125,000 yen in 25 years, an increase of 25%, while even the cheapest yearless (NAS) product rose 20% at 3,500 yen to 4,200 yen. This is how much its pricing has risen in the Japanese market, and whether the price of products supplied to China will increase is unknown, but even if the price does not increase, it will not be so affordable to bring Yamazaki back from Japan in the future.
That's the power of blue-chip stocks. But even so, even buying some of Yamazaki's high-vintage products at a relatively high level is not easy to become a "non-performing asset", because at the very least, you can open the wine and slowly taste it.
