The name of "the most beautiful uncle" Xie Shangwei has long been a household name. In January 2013, the Xie Shangwei Lei Feng Volunteer Service Team named after him was established, and in July 2016, the service team was upgraded to the Shangwei Volunteer Association, and the scope of volunteer services includes environmental beautification, traffic guidance, poverty alleviation and assistance to the disabled, care for minors, patriotic education, and donation of loving clothes. Volunteer service has been continuously upgraded and has become an important force leading social trends. Up to now, the association has 1200 registered volunteers, with a total of 230,000 hours of volunteer service and 191 hours of volunteer service per capita.

6 years of perseverance in volunteer service

On the 18th, at the traffic lights located at the intersection of Xingsandao Street and Xidazhi Street in Harbin's Nangang District, four volunteers wearing the red vests of the Xie Shangwei Volunteer Service Team were assisting in directing traffic. "It's a red light, please cross the street later." Volunteers like this don't know how many times a day they say it. The reporter saw at the scene that due to the volunteers' assistance in maintaining traffic order, the traffic of people and vehicles at the intersection was very smooth and orderly.

According to Yu Fan, vice president of the Shangwei Volunteer Association who led the team, every time a volunteer service activity was convened, everyone actively participated. Today, in addition to assisting in the maintenance of traffic, volunteers also go to Shaman Community to clean up small advertisements and beautify the community environment.

Zhang Wanming, a 20-year-old volunteer who assists in directing traffic at the intersection, has been engaged in volunteer service for more than 6 years. "At the beginning of the establishment of the Xie Shangwei Lei Feng Volunteer Service Team, I joined in with my parents, and through participating in various volunteer activities, I felt a sense of honor as a volunteer, and also grew from a very rebellious teenager to a loving volunteer." Zhang Wanming told reporters that volunteer service must be sustained, and now participating in volunteer activities has become an indispensable part of his life. "Not only Zhang Wanming, but also every volunteer of the association has participated in volunteer activities with a persistent spirit, and has continued to dedicate love to the city for 6 years." Yu Fan told reporters.

Volunteering warms the city

Over the past 6 years, the volunteers of The Shangwei Volunteer Association have advocated a positive and upward spiritual outlook through various forms of activities, promoted the construction of socialist spiritual civilization, and added warmth to the city. Volunteers strive to be messengers of love and create a spiritual atmosphere of "I am for everyone, everyone is for me".

According to Xie Shangwei, for more than 6 years, the association has taken the initiative to undertake traffic guidance at the intersection of Shangzhi Avenue and West 12th Avenue Street in Daoli District, and used it as a fixed "civilized traffic post" volunteer service place to persuade pedestrians to cross the street in a civilized manner. In July 2015, after the establishment of the "Ice City Junior" detachment, the traffic guidance service scope radiated to 6 surrounding streets, every Monday morning, regardless of cold and heat, uninterrupted.

During the interview, the reporter learned that the Shangwei Volunteer Association actively carried out a series of activities such as respecting the elderly and helping the disabled, environmental protection, and helping the needy and the orphans. Volunteers sent daily necessities, clothing, rice noodles and other items to the elderly; repeatedly called for donations of tens of thousands of yuan for children with leukemia, actively contacted Xigaze and other areas in Tibet, and sent a large number of clothes to poor children and other recipient groups; organized public welfare publicity activities, carried out safety persuasion in the Kaijiang and Fengjiang rivers along the Songhua River, and spontaneously carried out activities such as tree planting, garbage removal, ice and snow removal; in the activities of World Book Day, the association and the Harbin Municipal Civilization Office jointly carried out the "Subway Reading Flash" activity. The Disciple Rules are distributed free of charge to passing children in the station. Over the years, every volunteer of Shangwei Volunteer Association has always been using his own practical actions to be the inheritor of love and public welfare.

Volunteering is about helping more people

Xie Shangwei believes that volunteering is a process, and a person who has not really experienced it will not experience the happiness in it, let alone understand the sour, sweet and salty in it. Xie Shangwei said that the acid is because there are still too many social groups that need to be cared for, and he feels that the power of one person is too small. Sweet because through the volunteers' efforts, the bits and pieces around him are slowly changing, and he feels satisfied and happy in his heart. And salty because in volunteering, they are often sweat and tears intertwined.

In addition to helping others in each Lei Feng volunteer service activity, Xie Shangwei also met more friends from all walks of life, learned a lot of knowledge, and cultivated his organizational and leadership skills.
