In the thirteenth year of Tenshō (1585), after surrendering to Hashiba Hideyoshi, the Maori family sent a water army to Kii Kingdom to support Hashiba Hideyoshi in pacifying the local Ichijō. Later, during the Shikoku Expedition, Maori Sent his uncle Hayakawa Takaaki to lead an expedition of 40,000 men to Shikoku to help the Habu family pacify the western front of the "Habu Siege Network", giving the Habu family the upper hand in the war with the Tokugawa clan, which eventually became one of the reasons for Tokugawa Ieyasu's submission.

Hideyoshi Hashiba

Hideyoshi Hashiba served as Sekibai in the same year of his conquest of Shikoku, and the following year the Haba family launched the "Kyushu Expedition" in support of the Ōtomo family, attacking the Satsuma Shimazu family. Ironically, the Maori family had always had good relations with the Shimazu family in Minami Kyushu in order to fight the Ōtomo family in Kitakyushu, but this time the Maori family sided with their old enemies and attacked their former allies. After the pacification of Kyushu, Hashiba Hideyoshi once wanted to reclaim the Territories of the Maori family's Bizen, Bigo, Boqi, and Iyo (sealed during the Shikoku Conquest) and transfer them to the Kyushu domains of Toyomae, Chikuzen, Chikugo, and Higo, but under the opposition of Maori Keigen, he finally gave up, and only transferred Takakei Kohayakawa from Iyo Toku domain to Kitakyushu. It is worth mentioning that Maori Akimoto's uncle Yoshikawa Motoharu fell ill and died during the Kyushu Expedition, and Kohayakawa Takakei was transferred to Kyushu, in fact, independent from the Maori family, so that the "Maori Two Rivers" system created by Maori Yuan during the period collapsed within a single generation.

In the first year of Bunroku (1592), Habu Hideyoshi launched a war of aggression against Korea, and Maori Huiyuan, as the most powerful daimyō in the Western Kingdom, responded to Habu Hideyoshi's call and led 30,000 Maori troops into Korea. However, due to the obstruction of the Japanese offensive after the Ming army entered the DPRK, when the Ming and Japan began to negotiate peace talks, Maori Huiyuan led his army back to Japan.

During the same period of invasion of Korea, Japan was not quiet inside. Habu Hideyoshi was childless in his early years, but later welcomed his nephew Habu Hideji as his adopted son, inheriting the positions of the Haba family and Sekibai. However, after Hideji became Sekibai, Hashiba Hideyoshi gave birth to a son Hideyoshi, so he had plans to depose him, and the final result of the "Hideji Incident" was that Hideji Hatashi committed suicide at Mt. Goyasan, and Hideyoshi, in order to strengthen the relationship between the daimyo and the Haba family, demanded that the daimyōs such as Maori Keigen and Tokugawa Ieyasu take an oath to the Habuki family and swear allegiance to the Habu hideyoshi.

Maori Huiyuan

In June of the second year of Keicho (1597), Takaaki Kohayakawa died, and the Hayakawa family was inherited by his adopted son Hideaki Hayakawa. After the death of Hayakawa Takakei, the relationship between the Hayakawa family and the Maori family became more distant, and many of the Maori family's territories that were worshipped during the Takakei era also needed to be returned to the Maori family at this time. In addition, Maori Huiyuan welcomed his nephew Maori Hidemoto as the heir in his early years, but later his son Hidemoto was born, resulting in Maori Hidemoto being deposed. Hashiba Hideyoshi eventually ruled that Mori Keigen would give Izumo Andiguine to Mori Hidemoto as domains, and then let the Yoshikawa Hiroya family inherit the legacy of Takakei Kohayakawa, but due to Hideyoshi's death in the following year, these two things were not implemented.

What Maori Huiyuan did not expect was that with the death of Hideyoshi Haba, the Maori family once again came to the cusp of the storm.

In the leap March of the fourth year of Keicho (1599), Hideyoshi Hashiba's retainer Toshiya Maeda, an important retainer to balance Tokugawa Ieyasu, died, and at the funeral of the Toshida family, Seven samurai generals, including Masanori Fukushima, attacked Ishida Sansei, and although the matter was peacefully resolved under the mediation of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the matter was peacefully resolved by Ishida Mitsunari, which was the most trusted of Hideyoshi Hashiba during his lifetime, and the real power of the Haba family fell into the hands of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

It is worth mentioning that at this time, Tokugawa Ieyasu intervened in the territorial distribution of the Maori family in the name of Hideyoshi's will, and asked Maori Keikin to grant Mori Hidemoto a domain in accordance with Hideyoshi's ruling. Maori Huiyuan was naturally reluctant to divide the Maori family in this way, so he refused to accept the order. Eventually, at the behest of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Mori Hidemoto had Mori Hidemoto inherit the legacy of his biological father, Hoida Motoki, while the Yoshikawa Hiroshi family's domain remained unchanged, and the Yoshikawa Hiroyoshi clan's previously agreed to the Yoshikawa Hiroshi family's Ōhakawa Takakei clan was also adopted as a direct domain by Mori Keimoto.

Kyushu

In May of the fifth year of Keicho (1600), Tokugawa Ieyasu launched the "Aizu Crusade" against Uesugi Keikatsu, another of the "Five Elders", and although Māori Keimoto opposed this, it had little effect. After Tokugawa Ieyasu's expedition, Ishida Sansei raised an army at Gyeonggi, supported Maori Keimoto as the general, and declared a crusade against the powerful minister Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Maori Keimoto also led an army of 60,000 into The Nishi-no-maru, Osaka Castle, where Ieyasu originally lived.

However, until the end of the Sekigahara War, Maori Keigen was inactive at Osaka Castle. The miraculous operation of Maori Keimoto, Yoshikawa Hiroyasu, and Hideaki Kohayakawa during the Battle of Sekigahara has also become the ironic meme of the "Maori Three Gods" that are talked about in the japanese history section of Chinese, namely the "God of War" Hideaki Kohayakawa (who attacked friendly forces at the critical moment), the "God of Food" Hiroya Yoshikawa (refused to participate in the war on the grounds of eating), and the "house god" Maori Keimoto (as a general who did not go to the front line but did not move in Osaka Castle).

However, after all, playing with terriers is only playing terriers, so why did the so-called "Maori Three Gods" have such magical operations during the Sekigahara War? Are the three people in history really as bad as they are in a joke?

Let's first talk about the "God of War" Kohayakawa Hideaki, in the general theory that Hayakawa Hideaki joined the Western Army, but on the day of the Battle of Sekigahara, Hideaki Kohayakawa, who was with Tokugawa Ieyasu Uchiharu, was at both ends of the Matsuo Mountain and refused to participate in either side, until after being attacked by the iron artillery team sent by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Kohayakawa Army joined the Eastern Army to participate in the battle, and the Kohayakawa Army also became the turning point in the victory of the Middle East Army in the Sekigahara War.

Chasing the Deer World: Sekigahara Battle and the Truth of the "Three Gods of the Maori Family"

First of all, Tokugawa Ieyasu's "Asking Iron Cannon" did not appear in any historical materials at all, but was only recorded in the "Kuroda Family Tree", "Sekigahara Military Chronicle Daisei", "Takayama Gongshi Record" and other secondary historical materials. That is to say, Tokugawa Ieyasu sent an iron artillery team to attack Hideaki Kohayakawa, which is basically a creation of the recent world, and in the Ōkawa drama, probably because of the fear that the iron cannon is not loud enough, the iron cannon is replaced by the crew without authorization.

Secondly, during the Sekigahara War, Hideaki Kohayakawa's movements were different from those in the general theory. In fact, as early as the day before the Sekigahara War, Kohayakawa Hideaki submitted an invitation to Tokugawa Ieyasu and concluded a covenant, which means that Hideaki Kohayakawa joined the Eastern Army before the Sekigahara War. At that time, Ishida Sansei's plan was to use Ogaki Castle and Gifu Castle as a defensive line to defend the Eastern Army, but due to the lack of Oda Hidenobu of Gifu Castle, gifu Castle fell into the hands of the Eastern Army, and the defensive line arranged by Ishida Sansei was missing a corner. After learning of Hideaki Hayakawa's intentions to join the Eastern Army, Ishida Misei also wrote to Hideaki Kohayakawa, and even promised Hideaki to serve as Sekibai before Hideyoshi became an adult. However, Hideaki Hayakawa was unmoved, and in order to avoid being attacked by the Western Army, Hideaki Hayakawa led his army to the east and came to The Castle of Mount Matsuo near Sekigahara.

Hideaki Hayakawa's movements aroused the vigilance of Ishida Sansei, who was now deployed in Sekigahara by Yoshiki Otani of the Western Army, and if Hideaki Hayakawa joined the Eastern Army, it would pose a threat to the Otani Army, so Ishida Mitsunei led his army from Ogaki Castle to the sekigahara to rescue Otani Yoshiki. According to Ishikawa Yasutsu and Yansaka Motomasa's joint signature to the Matsudaira family ( a historical source ) , the Battle of Sekigahara took place in the morning (9:00 to 11:00 a.m.), and at the beginning of the war , Hideaki Kohayakawa , Yasuharu Wakasaka , Yudada Ogawa , and Yushi Ogawa joined the Eastern Army and defeated the Western Army in one fell swoop. That is to say, unlike in the general theory, the Sekigahara Battle did not last for a day, but ended in one morning, and Hideaki Kohayakawa also joined the war situation when the war began, and there is no such story as the so-called iron cannon.

Chasing the Deer World: Sekigahara Battle and the Truth of the "Three Gods of the Maori Family"

Hideaki Kobayakawa

Next, let's talk about the "god of food" Yoshikawa Hiroya, the main reason why Yoshikawa Hiroka carried the pot of "god of food" is because the Ōkawa drama arranged the line "Eating" to him. In fact, the Yoshikawa Hiroshi family had judged that the Western Army would be defeated before the Battle of Sekigahara, so they secretly communicated with the Tokugawa family and agreed to join the Eastern Army on the condition of blocking the Mori family's territory. At that time, there were many military generals in the Western Army, and Maori Huiyuan also learned of these things, but he could not judge who was in the Maori army and the Eastern Army, so he was wary of Maori Hidemoto and Yoshikawa Hiroya.

At the time of the Sekigahara War, Maori Hidemoto, a major general in the Maori Army, wanted to participate in the war, but Hiroya Yoshikawa, a Maori army forward who was in communication with the Tokugawa family, refused to participate in the war, making Maori Hidemoto dare not act rashly. Speaking of which, in terms of blood, Maori Keigen, Yoshikawa Hiroya and Mori Hidemoto are all cousins, and in the face of the Yoshikawa Hiroya in front of the Maori army, Maori Hidemoto can only cross the Yoshikawa Army or completely annihilate the Yoshikawa Army if he wants to participate in the war. In Japan at that time, if someone crossed the front and joined the battle first, it was not in line with military law and could be punished. Moreover, if Maori Hidemoto were to forcibly enter the war, and after the war, he would go back to report to Huiyuan that his cousin was not moving like a mountain in the battlefield, so I suddenly attacked him, wouldn't this just give Maori Huiyuan an excuse to deal with him?

Therefore, when faced with the emissaries sent by the Nagashu Masamune to urge the troops, Maori Hidemoto had no choice but to cope: "Our army is eating..." Since maori hideen's official position is the three senators, and the tang name of the senator is "prime minister", people later ridiculed Maori Hidemoto for pretending not to eat and not sending troops as "the prime minister's empty bento".

To be honest, I can't blame Maori Hidemoto, it's quite miserable.

Finally, back to the "house god" Maori Huiyuan, what was Maori Huiyuan doing during the Sekigahara War? In fact, when the Sekigahara War took place, Maori Keigen took command in Osaka Castle and constantly launched wars in the Western Kingdom. After the formation of the Western Army, Mori Keigen first sent troops to occupy Tokushima, the territory of the Bee-Suga family, and then transferred the people of the old lord Iyo Domain of his uncle Hayakawa Takakei to join him, and also supported the return of the deposed Ōtomo Yoshitomo to Kyushu Toyogo Domain, calling on the old vassals of the Otomo family to raise an army to fight the Kuroda clan of the Eastern Military. The reason why we have the illusion of "doing nothing during the Sekigahara War" is because we focus on sekigahara in the east, and thus ignore the battlefield in the west. Rather than saying that Mori Keigen did not participate in the Sekigahara Battle of Osaka Castle, it was better to say that Mori Keigen did not have time to participate in the battle, and he did not expect that Gifu Castle could be lost so quickly, and the battle of the Sekigahara Battle could be fought in only half a day.

Chasing the Deer World: Sekigahara Battle and the Truth of the "Three Gods of the Maori Family"

After the defeat of the Western Army, the Maori army, which had suffered almost no losses, retreated to Osaka Castle, and at this time the Western Army still had about 50,000 to 60,000 troops in Osaka Castle, and Maori Hidemoto, Tachibana Muneshige, and Shimazu Yoshihiro all advocated supporting Hashiba Hiderai as the main cage castle defense, but Maori Keimoto was privately persuaded by Tokugawa Ieyasu to block the territory, and finally led the Maori army to retreat.

However, Tokugawa Ieyasu naturally will not let go of Maori Huiyuan. After entering Osaka Castle, Tokugawa Ieyasu proposed that the Yoshikawa Hiroyasu family had said that Maori Keigen had little to do with the Western Army when communicating with the Tokugawa family, but after the Tokugawa family collected the letters from Osaka Castle, it was discovered that Mori Keimoto was operating as a general of the Western Army. Therefore, Tokugawa Ieyasu stated that the previous agreement to block the domain was invalid, and that all the territory of the Maori family would be confiscated, but because the Yoshikawa Hiroyami family was actively communicating with the Tokugawa family, the Yoshikawa family's Zhou Fang Kingdom and Nagato Kingdom could be sealed to the Yoshikawa Hiroshi family, so that the Yoshikawa Hiroshi family could return to the family to inherit the Maori family.

Naturally, the Yoshikawa Hiroyasu family was reluctant to do such a thing that was poked in the spine, and in addition, the Tokugawa clan's heavy minister, Ieyana Masamune, also said that it was too dark for you to directly confiscate the eight kingdoms by hand, and Tokugawa Ieyasu finally agreed to give the Zhou Defense Kingdom and Nagato Kingdom that were originally intended to be given to the Hiroto family to the Maori family. However, the territory was not directly given to Maori Huiyuan, but in the form of his concubine Maori Xiu as the governor of the Maori family, so Maori Xiu was the original lord of choshu domain. Due to the defeat of the Sekigahara War, Maori Keigen lost the territory that his ancestors had been running for many years, and after the establishment of the Edo shogunate, the Maori family became active as a foreign daimyō of the shogunate, and even participated in the "Osaka Battle" that attacked the Habu family.

Choshu Domain

In April of the second year of Kanei (1625), Maori Keigen died in seclusion at the age of seventy-three. Although the Maori family of the Edo period was unknown, what no one could have imagined was that this obscure Choshu domain could eventually become one of the important pawns in the overthrow of the Edo shogunate, and even influenced the current Japan.
