More than 10 Chinese scholars were elected! Another batch of academicians was announced

On June 14, local time, the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced the list of new academicians in 2021, and a total of 52 outstanding scholars were elected, including 50 new academicians and two new international academicians. Affected by the epidemic, this election was held by video conference, and this year's inauguration ceremony was postponed to October 2021.

Founded in 1987, the Canadian Academy of Engineering is an independent, autonomous, non-profit organization. Academicians of the Canadian Academy of Engineering are awarded by the Federal Government of Canada to represent Canadian national level experts and professors in the field of engineering, and as a national think tank to provide authoritative opinions for project approval, review and research at the national level. Each new academician is nominated and elected by peers.

▎Li Cheng, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Dr. Cheng Li is an internationally renowned mechanical engineering educator, researcher and engineering practitioner. Specializes in sound and vibration, wave manipulation and structural health monitoring and has made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in these areas. In addition to a large number of high-quality scientific contributions, his research has had a direct impact on solving engineering problems through close cooperation with industry. Dr. Cheng Li has made significant contributions to academic and professional organizations. He has held key leadership positions in academia and has held positions in some of the top scientific journals in his area of expertise.

▎Professor Fang Fang of Nanjing Agricultural University

Professor Fang is a world-renowned expert in renewable energy and green technologies. He has made significant contributions in the fields of biomass hydrolysis, biodiesel production, biofuel synthesis nanocatalysts, etc. He has trained many students and engineers in Canada, Japan, Malaysia and China. He also serves as an editorial board member and editorial board member of major energy journals. As the founding editor-in-chief of the Springer series Biofuels and Biorefining, he is leading a Canadian editorial team to organize and assist authors in publishing a series of biomass-related books that have made outstanding contributions to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

His landmark research, combined with his distinguished leadership in improving engineering knowledge, has built a significant impact on edge intelligence that benefits the wider community.

▎ Dongyang Li, Professor, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada

Professor Li Dongyang is a world-renowned scientist and innovative researcher in the field of tribology. His interdisciplinary research and novel materials design approach has greatly contributed to advances in materials technology and influenced wear control, improving the competitiveness of the Canadian resources industry in the global fuel market. Professor Lee has published more than 360 peer-reviewed scientific works and has developed technical standards and guidelines for authoritative manuals/encyclopedias. He serves on the editorial boards of 18 international journals. His pioneering research and contributions to industry and professional associations are highly recognized internationally. Dr. Lee is the recipient of the 2020 METSOC Distinguished Materials Scientist Award (CIM's METSOC).

Pengfei Liu, Professor of Marine Fluid Dynamics, Department of Engineering, Newcastle University

Ye Tao, Chief Research Officer, National Research Council of Canada

Dr. Tao Ye is a physicist and chief research officer at the National Research Council of Canada's Centre for Advanced Electronics and Photonics Studies. He has conducted pioneering research in organic light-emitting diodes, optoelectronics and printable electronics. His research focuses on understanding the relationship between molecular structure, thin film morphology, and device properties. His efforts in this area over the past two decades have made him one of Canada's most influential research leaders in this area. His work has directly contributed to the formation and development of the Canadian organic electronics and printed electronics industries.

Dr. Ruilin Yang has long been engaged in research in the field of explosive technology, and his work has been fruitful. Zhang Dapeng is recognized as the world's leading biometric engineering expert and pioneer for his extraordinary achievements. He has pioneered and made significant contributions to several research areas including palmprint certification, medical biosensors and systems. He has been named a Highly Cited Fellow in Engineering by Clarivate Analytics for seven consecutive years (2014-2020). With an H-index of 120, he ranks about 80th among the top 1000 scientists in the international computer science/electronics field. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, and a Fellow of the IEEE Lifetime Fellow.

He has received the International Industrial Engineering Society (IIE) Baker Distinguished Research Award, the IEEE Reliability Lifetime Achievement Award, the IEEE Millennium Medal, and the American Quality Society (ASQ) A Bonis Reliability Research Outstanding Achievement Award.
