有趣的英語冷知識（150）Bite the dust可是“啃灰”？實際狀況真的很不妙！
Bite the dust是個很常用的英語俚語，字面上看起來好像是“啃灰”或者“吃土”的意思，但實際狀況可能要悲催得多。
劍橋英語詞典對它的解釋有多種：
1.to fall so that your body hits the ground heavily（重重倒在上）；
2.to die（倒斃，斃命）；
3.to end in failure（失敗，完蛋）。
都是一些很慘不忍睹的描述。
它不但可以用來描述人的死亡，被打敗，也可以表示企業的破産，機械性的東西的壞掉等等。
網絡上有一個很形象的翻譯“敗者吃土”，還是挺到位的。
它的來源說法有好幾種，比較早的可以追溯到《荷馬史詩》，書中用bite the dust形容戰士死亡的慘狀。

As they came around the bend several riders bit the dust.

1.bite your lip
字面意思：咬住你的嘴唇；實際意思：隐忍不語，不想說話，一言不發。
lip也可以換成tongue。
Learn to bite your lip.
學會在适當的時候閉上嘴巴。
2.bite the bullet
字面意思：咬子彈；實際意思：硬着頭皮做；忍受苦難。
You simply have to bite the bullet and do it.
你隻能硬着頭皮做那事兒了。
3.be bitten by sth
字面意思：被…咬住了；實際意思：對某事物着迷；熱衷于某事物
He's been bitten by the travel bug.
他迷上了旅遊。
4.bite back
字面意思：咬回去，實際意思：回應，把話咽回去，強忍不說出來。
表示對言語攻擊進行反擊，憤怒地回應。
Even the weakest animal will bite back when it is cornered.
要是被逼急了，甚至最弱小的動物也會回咬一口。
Susan bit back the words she would like to have said...
蘇珊話到嘴邊又咽了回去。
5.bite the hand that feeds you
字面意思：咬住喂食的手；實際意思：傷害恩人，恩将仇報
給小動物喂食，但是它卻咬了你的手，是以它的意思就是恩将仇報。
Regarding your boss, you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you.
至于你的老闆，你不應對他恩将仇報。
Never bite the hand that feeds you, and never turn your back on the heart that loves you.
不要傷害于你有恩的人。不要背棄愛你的人。
6.once bitten, twice shy
一朝被蛇咬，十年怕井繩
Jenny certainly won't go to swimming，once bitten, twice shy.
珍妮肯定不會再去遊泳了，所謂一朝被蛇咬，十年怕井繩。
Once bitten, twice shy. I always do now.
