有趣的英语冷知识（150）Bite the dust可是“啃灰”？实际状况真的很不妙！
Bite the dust是个很常用的英语俚语，字面上看起来好像是“啃灰”或者“吃土”的意思，但实际状况可能要悲催得多。
剑桥英语词典对它的解释有多种：
1.to fall so that your body hits the ground heavily（重重倒在上）；
2.to die（倒毙，毙命）；
3.to end in failure（失败，完蛋）。
都是一些很惨不忍睹的描述。
它不但可以用来描述人的死亡，被打败，也可以表示企业的破产，机械性的东西的坏掉等等。
网络上有一个很形象的翻译“败者吃土”，还是挺到位的。
它的来源说法有好几种，比较早的可以追溯到《荷马史诗》，书中用bite the dust形容战士死亡的惨状。

在那场战斗中，许多士兵阵亡了。
As they came around the bend several riders bit the dust.
拐弯时几个骑手摔倒了。

1.bite your lip
字面意思：咬住你的嘴唇；实际意思：隐忍不语，不想说话，一言不发。
lip也可以换成tongue。
Learn to bite your lip.
学会在适当的时候闭上嘴巴。
2.bite the bullet
字面意思：咬子弹；实际意思：硬着头皮做；忍受苦难。
You simply have to bite the bullet and do it.
你只能硬着头皮做那事儿了。
3.be bitten by sth
字面意思：被…咬住了；实际意思：对某事物着迷；热衷于某事物
He's been bitten by the travel bug.
他迷上了旅游。
4.bite back
字面意思：咬回去，实际意思：回应，把话咽回去，强忍不说出来。
表示对言语攻击进行反击，愤怒地回应。
Even the weakest animal will bite back when it is cornered.
要是被逼急了，甚至最弱小的动物也会回咬一口。
Susan bit back the words she would like to have said...
苏珊话到嘴边又咽了回去。
5.bite the hand that feeds you
字面意思：咬住喂食的手；实际意思：伤害恩人，恩将仇报
给小动物喂食，但是它却咬了你的手，所以它的意思就是恩将仇报。
Regarding your boss, you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you.
至于你的老板，你不应对他恩将仇报。
Never bite the hand that feeds you, and never turn your back on the heart that loves you.
不要伤害于你有恩的人。不要背弃爱你的人。
6.once bitten, twice shy
一朝被蛇咬，十年怕井绳
Jenny certainly won't go to swimming，once bitten, twice shy.
珍妮肯定不会再去游泳了，所谓一朝被蛇咬，十年怕井绳。
Once bitten, twice shy. I always do now.
