Falling Leaves
落叶
Maple 枫树
Child: Mom, there are so many leaves on the ground.
宝宝：妈妈，地上有好多叶子啊。
Mom: Yes, that's because fall is here.
妈妈：是的，这是因为秋天来了。
Child: Wow! Look at this strange red leaf!
宝宝：哇！看这个奇怪的红叶！
Mom: That's a maple leaf.
妈妈：这是一个枫叶。
Doesn't it look like a star?
看起来像不像个星星？
A star has five points,
星星有五个角，
and this maple leaf also has five points.
这个枫叶也有五个角。
However, the number of points can be just 3
但是，角的个数可以只有3个，
or as many as 7.
或者多达7个。
Child: I see.
宝宝：明白了。
I'll use it as a bookmark -
我要用它做个书签，
I really like the red color.
我很喜欢这个红色。
Ginkgo 银杏
Child: Ooh, what's this yellow leaf called?
宝宝：唔，这个黄色叶子叫什么啊？
It looks like a fan.
它看起来像个扇子。
Mom: That's a ginkgo leaf.
妈妈：这是银杏叶。
Child: Oh, the yummy nut's leaf?
宝宝：哦，好吃的果果的叶子？
Mom: Yes, but remember not to eat too many ginkgo nuts,
妈妈：是的，但是记得银杏果不能吃太多，
because they are a type of medicine, too.
因为它也是一种药。
Adults can eat no more than 10 per day,
成人每天吃的数量不能超过10个，
and children should eat even less.
小孩子要再少吃一些。
Poplar 杨树
Child: Mom, I found some big leaves!
宝宝：妈妈，我找到很多大叶子！
Mom: I see them, too!
妈妈：我也看到啦！
They're poplar leaves.
那些是杨树叶。
We had a fun game to play with poplar leaves when I was little.
我小时候有一个好玩的游戏就是用杨树叶玩的。
Child: Oh, can you play that game with me, Mommy?
宝宝：哦，你可以和我玩这个游戏吗，妈妈？
Mom: Sure, it's called a leaf stem fight.
妈妈：当然，它叫拔根儿。
Let's each pick a leaf with a thick and tough stem,
咱们每人挑一个根儿又粗又有韧性的叶子，
pull off the leaf,
把叶子拔掉，
and keep the stem.
留着根儿。
When you play,
玩的时候，
hold the two ends of the stem
握着根儿的两端，
and cross yours with mine,
把你的和我的交叉，
then pull as hard as you can.
然后使劲儿拔。
Child: Mom, your stem broke.
宝宝：妈妈，你的根儿断了。
Mom: Yes, you win!
妈妈：是的，你赢了！
Child: That was fun!
宝宝：真好玩！
I'll find you another stem,
我再给你找个根儿，
and let's play again.
咱们再玩一次。
Elm 榆树
Mom: Look at this oval leaf with jagged edges and a pointed tip.
妈妈：看看这个椭圆形、锯齿边、尖头的叶子。
This is an elm tree leaf.
这是个榆树叶。
This tree is extra special -
这种树非常特别，
in the past when food was scarce,
过去在食物短缺的时候,
some people would eat elm leaves to satisfy their hunger.
有些人就用榆树叶来填饱肚子。
Child: Wow! I want to try one!
宝宝：哇！我要尝一个！
Mom: No, we don't want to eat it raw,
妈妈：不行，咱们不能生吃，
and even the cooked ones wouldn't taste good.
而且即使做熟的也不怎么好吃。
Evergreen Trees 常青树
Child: Mommy, why are some trees' leaves still green
宝宝：妈妈，为什么有的树的叶子还是绿色的，
and don't change color?
不变色呢？
Mom: That's because they are special trees called evergreen trees,
妈妈：因为那些是很特别的树，叫常青树，
such as pine trees and cypress.
比如松树和柏树。
Can you guess why they got that name?
你能猜到它们的名字是怎么得来的吗？
Child: Because their leaves stay green all year round.
宝宝：因为它们的树叶一年四季都是绿色的。
Mom: Exactly!
妈妈：没错！
Fortunately, we have evergreen trees -
幸好我们还有常青树，
otherwise we wouldn't have any bit of green in winter.
否则我们冬天就一点绿色都没有了。
