In the early morning of November 13, 1948, Chen Bray, who was known for his "literary boldness", died alone in his Nanjing apartment after taking a large number of sleeping pills, and the adjutant recalled that his craggy right hand was clutching the letter of Chiang Kai-shek that he had followed all his life, and the house was scattered with a number of suicide notes for his close relatives and party friends. After years of suffering from physical and mental illness, his last words to the world were: "Let me be quiet." ”
Chen Brei's death coincided with the beginning of the defeat of the Kuomintang army in the Kuomintang civil war, less than a year after the Kuomintang regime was defeated and retreated to Taiwan. As Chiang Kai-shek's most relied core staff member for more than a decade, Chen Bray, who was known as the "perfect man of the present", declared his irreparable fate of defeat by suicide when the political forces to which he was loyal were in danger.

In the final stage of her life, the series of incidents in which the youngest daughter Chen Lian became close to the CCP (actually a party member) and was even arrested by the Kuomintang undoubtedly caused a major spiritual blow to Chen Bray, who regarded himself as a "lonely loyalist" and valued his family and country. Although Chen also privately spoke highly of Mao Zedong's "On the New Stage" (one of the political reports made by Mao Zedong at the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee of the Communist Party of China), he believed that this article reflected that "the Communist Party's argument is not hindered, the wording of the words is unusually deliberate and irritating to both internal and external, and it is not irritating", and he also expressed heartfelt admiration for Zhou Enlai, but because they are each other's biggest political opponents, they have no good feelings except due respect. However, when the youngest daughter Chen Lian, who was studying at the time, was chatting with her, there was already a phenomenon of "the views between father and daughter can not be agreed in the end", if there are opposing political opinions within ordinary families, it will not affect the reality of life, but for Chen Bray, who has long followed the Three People's Principles and is loyal to the only leader, it is difficult to accept direct "rebellion" within the family after all. In September 1947, Chen Lian and her husband were arrested in Beiping, and Chen Brei was "unable to ask about his affairs because of his position and position, and his thoughts were sullen." Soon Chiang Kai-shek personally invited Chen Bray to dinner, telling chen about Chen Lian's affairs, and by December Chen Lian had been released and returned home, Chen Bray wrote in his diary: "After talking with him for more than three hours, he knew that he did not know much about the nature of the so-called 'People's Youth' (referring to the Democratic Youth Alliance), and he had no intention of abandoning his family lessons. To think that he has been deceived by being far away is to blame Yu Zhi for being too careless. It is not difficult to detect his love for his daughter and the guilt of self-blame.

In the last year of Chen Bray's life, the Kuomintang regime was already in a situation of turmoil and turmoil and the building was about to collapse, while Chen was still constantly running for contacts for the smooth progress of the "Constitutional Congress" in order to safeguard Chiang Kai-shek's authority. At this time, Chen Bray's health was deteriorating, and the symptoms of insomnia, dizziness, headache and other symptoms that he usually saw increased unabated, and the sleeping pills he took were almost ineffective. Even more devastating to his fragile mental condition is the fact that he has witnessed the gradual demise of the party-state that has served for decades, and is suffering from the inability to serve it again. Everywhere in the diary, it can be seen that "Yu's body is weak to this point, and his knowledge is dark, so that he has a short-lived, futile knowledge, and so on, without the slightest help." Recently, there has been an absolute loss of confidence in one's health and ability to serve. Recalling the original intention of the past twenty years to promise the country, the true sense of no place can be self-contained" and other fierce words, emotional depression, it is not difficult to imagine that Chen Bray was suffering from long-term illness at this time, accumulating negative emotions accumulated for many years, and this unbearable burden finally overwhelmed him.
Returning to the two suicide notes left to Chiang Kai-shek, in addition to expressing extreme self-reproach for himself, the words and sentences show that he is loyal to Chiang Kai-shek, and at the end of the second suicide note, he gives the final statement of more than twenty years of liver and guts: "My heart is pure and straight, and I have no selfish intentions except loyalty to my father. Dare to be public again. ”
