Mission estate is New Zealand's oldest winery with over 170 years of winemaking history. Since its establishment in 1851, the winery has been run by the same owner to this day, and its high-quality wines are one of the most historic and sustainable wineries in New Zealand.

In 1838, a group of French missionaries came from afar to establish the Marist mission in northern New Zealand. In 1851, they built a missionary station in Meeanee, Hawke's Bay area, and in 1858 the missionaries moved there. Here they formed a community, built churches and schools, and planted grapes for the making of canonical liturgical wines and table wines.

In 1897, the missionaries purchased the land of the current MingSheng Winery, which covers 800 acres. The faithful traveled back and forth from meeanee every day, working hard, setting up a small orchard and planting grapes. In 1909, the founder, Mr. Smythe, relocated the original neighborhood and mansion to this site. In 1931, an earthquake of 7.9 on the Richter scale in Hawkes Bay nearly destroyed the entire Ming Saint Winery, killing 2 priests and 7 students, but in 1932 they returned here to rebuild their homes. By 1935, there were a total of 80 students.

Today, as the oldest winery in New Zealand, the winery has earned an excellent reputation for its stable and excellent quality wines.
