Canada approves the use of steviol glycosides for a variety of foods

author:China Food News

Health Canada recently released a revised list of allowed sweeteners to approve the use of steviol glycosides from Saccharomyces cerevisiae y63348 in a variety of foods. It is understood that steviol glycosides from the plant stevia, Saccharomyces cerevisiae cd15380 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae cd15407 have been allowed to be used in a variety of foods in Canada.

At present, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the European Commission, and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare have allowed steviol glycosides to be used as a sweetener for a variety of foods. According to the assessment of the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization, the allowable daily intake of the substance is 4 mg per kilogram of body weight (in steviol equivalent). In China, steviol glycosides as food additives have been listed in the "National Standard for Food Safety Food Additive Use Standards" (gb 2760), allowed to be used in candied cold fruits, candy, pastries and other food categories. On the basis of gb2760-2014, steviol glycosides were approved twice in 2017 and 2020 to expand the scope of application.

The analysis believes that whether in beverages, snacks, soy products or candy, the opportunity for stevia has matured, and with the improvement of the taste of stevia by suppliers, it is believed that the development space of steviol glycosides will be greater in the future.
