During the Eastern Han Dynasty, in order to unite the countries of the Western Regions against the Xiongnu, the dynasty sent Ban Chao as an envoy to the Western Regions. At that time, Ban Chao proposed to take only thirty-six horses, and under Dou Gu's surprise, he also agreed to his proposal, and from then on, Ban Chao embarked on the path of a magical messenger. Armed with a Han Dynasty staff, he set out with a delegation, and the first to arrive was the State of Shanshan, which was located southwest of present-day Lop Nur in Xinjiang and was relatively wealthy. Everyone answered in unison: "We obey your orders!" Ban Chao immediately slammed the table and said very decisively: "We can only eliminate the Xiongnu so that we can complete our mission." At night, Ban Chao led his men to rush into the camp where the Xiongnu were stationed, and taking advantage of their lack of defense, they won more with less and more, and wiped out more than 100 heavily armed Huns.
The next day, Ban Chao carried the head of the Xiongnu emissary to see King Shanshan, who was surprised and frightened, and Ban Chao accused the king of fickleness, and soon after Ban Chao's powerful assault, he signed an alliance agreement with the Han Dynasty. Ban Chao's move shook the Western Regions, and other countries also signed alliances with the Han Dynasty, and many small countries also expressed permanent friendship with the Han Dynasty. Ban Chao successfully completed his mission.
In recognition of Ban Chao's exploits, the imperial court named him the Marquis of Dingyuan (定遠侯), a thousand households in Yiyi, and later generations called him "Ban Dingyuan".
