According to the Bangladesh Daily Star, aquaculture in Bangladesh has developed rapidly in recent years, with an annual output of about 2 million tons of freshwater fish, becoming the fifth largest freshwater fish producer in the world. The top four countries are China, Indonesia, India and Vietnam.

According to the relevant statistics of the Bangladesh Ministry of Fisheries, the country produces about 3.7 million tons of fish per year, accounting for 3.69% of its GDP, and 17.8 million people are employed in fisheries, which is equivalent to the number of employees in its garment manufacturing industry.
