Like points and lines, polygons are also one of the basic elements of graphic design, compared to the first two visual elements, polygons have more symbolic appearance features, so in terms of emotional expression, the information that surface elements can convey is more intuitive.
After any line is moved by a specified amount of time, the trajectory left behind forms a face in the geometry. In graphic design, relative to points and lines, the surface elements occupy the largest picture area, so visually it has a stronger expressiveness. It should be noted that as the morphological characteristics of this element continue to change, the psychological induction it brings will also change.
In graphic design, the morphological characteristics of a surface are mainly determined by its constituent factors, such as:
(1) Positives. In geometry, the movement or enlargement of counterpoint and line elements is used to form the morphology of the surface, and we call the surface obtained through this expression the real surface, and it is also defined as the positive surface. The visual impression of reality is simple and straightforward, which can make the emotional expression of the picture more powerful.
(2) The negative side. In geometry, the concentrated arrangement of counterpoint and line elements is used to form the morphology of the surface, and we call the surface obtained by this arrangement as the imaginary surface, and it is also defined as the negative surface. The negative side is mainly arranged by the combination of points and lines, and the structure will become very complicated, and the visual will be particularly delicate.
In the actual design process, the composition of the surface is diverse, we according to the different principles of surface composition, it is summarized into four ways, namely free surface, organic surface, accidental surface and geometric surface. According to the overall style tendency of the picture and the shape characteristics of the design object, the corresponding rules of expression are selected, so as to create an idealized flat work.
The so-called geometric surface refers to those geometric figures that often appear in the field of mathematics, such as ellipses, triangles and trapezoids, etc., which are mainly calculated by complex mathematical formulas. According to the difference in appearance, the geometric surface is divided into two types: straight and surface:
(1) Face to face. Completely composed of straight lines, common straight faces are triangles, rectangles and trapezoids, etc., these direct faces can give people an angular visual impression, and their internal structure also has a high degree of rigor. Applying the direct face to the graphic design can not only give the picture structure a sense of regularity, but also strengthen people's trust in the theme information.
(2) Surfaces. Refers to a type of surface block composed entirely of curves, common surfaces are mainly circles and ellipses, in addition to irregular circles also belong to surfaces. The characteristic of the surface is that it has an extremely sleek external structure, and its application in the flat design can make the overall picture appear more flexible and plump.
The so-called organic form and decency refers to those objective things that have left us with deep memories, some of which are naturally produced, such as flowers, birds, cordyceps, mountains, etc., and some things are made by man, such as cars, clothing and buildings. In the actual creative process, through the concise treatment of these things, to form an organic surface shape.
In graphic design, through the simplification of the form of the thing, the organic shape of the thing can be obtained, and the high sense of visual refinement of the element can be used, so as to give the picture a corresponding symbolic meaning, and use this element to trigger the audience's association and deepen their memory of the image.
In addition to refining the image of the object, we can also get the organic form in other ways. For example, the use of the figurative composition of the object, simply put, through the collage and combination of visual elements, to constitute the object form we want to get, through this composition of the organic shape decent, not only in the appearance of the sense of simplicity, but also in the sense of strong symbolism.
The so-called accidental form, refers to the action of human or natural factors, the formation of a face with a strong randomness, the accidental shape of the surface is not a fixed form, the element applied to our design, can make the overall novelty of the work is greatly enhanced, and add to the fun of the picture itself.
In the actual design process, we can rely on some special means to directly obtain the surface of the accidental shape. For example, the irregular surfaces formed by splashing water on the dry ground, or the use of pigments to sprinkle on the paper at will, the surfaces obtained in these ways are often full of randomness, which can not only bring us a certain ornamental pleasure, but even enhance the artistic value of the work itself.
There is also a kind of accidental surface formed by natural factors, such as: the shape of the road surface after the rain, the shape of the mountain range formed by the movement of the earth's crust, etc., these accidental surfaces composed of natural phenomena not only have unrepeatable particularity in structure, but also visually bring the audience a strong aesthetic taste.
In graphic design, we can obtain the free form of the surface in two ways: one is obtained by drawing with bare hands, and the other is obtained by using the arrangement between objects and images. Although there are differences in their access to them, they can bring people a casual and free psychological feeling in the actual expression of emotions.
(1) The free-form decent surface produced by hand-drawn or computer software not only has a unique appearance shape, but also has a strong illustration effect in the structural form, and the appearance of this kind of face in the work can also play a role in decorating the picture. It should be noted that there is no fixed design pattern and idea of free-form surfaces, and when we create this type of creation, we must carry out related activities around the central theme of the picture.
(2) In graphic design, visual elements are arranged in a regular or irregular form, and the overall image formed after the concentration of objects and images is used to form the free form of the surface. The surface form obtained through the arrangement method has a super randomness, and in the actual design process, we use the irregularity of the element in appearance to break the rigidity of the screen layout.
In short, the surface can create a graphic work with great visual penetration.
