History
At the beginning of the Prohibition period in the United States, the Boston Herald held a nationwide call for terms, a mini-contest that asked readers to create a word to describe "a drunkard who doesn't care about the law illegally making or illegally obtaining spirits", and of the 25,000 shortlisted words, scofflaw stood out, and on January 25, 1924, the newspaper announced the result of Scooplaw's victory. The two people who created it shared a $200 prize. Since then, the word scofflaw has been closely associated with the Prohibition period. That's why you'll see it in many speakeasy underground style bars.
Within two weeks of the word's invention, jock of Harry's New York bar in Paris invented the cocktail named after the word.
