My grandfather was very handsome, he was tall, he had a bold personality, he was serious about all people and things, but he had no heart. His hearty laughter, gentle eyes, and strong posture all gave people vitality. He is knowledgeable, open-minded, simple and simple, but also infectious, never hides the true feelings in his heart, and always gives people a heart that confesses right and wrong.

I love my grandfather very much, in the eyes of others he is a great writer, a great writer, a great collector, but in my eyes, he is the grandfather who loves me. Now I am the only one left in the family who has seen my grandfather, and I have a little memory left, and most of my grandfather's stories are told to me by my mother.

Grandpa and me

In life, my grandfather especially liked children, and at that time, my uncle was not married, of course, he could not talk about the next generation, so my sister and I became the third generation that he particularly loved. At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China in the early 1950s, my grandfather was a vice minister in the Ministry of Culture, and his work was particularly busy, but as long as he was in Beijing, as long as he did not work at night, he would come to my house after work to see me and my sister. And would pick me up every Saturday for a night at his house. But my mother didn't want me to go, because every time I went to my grandparents' house, I would get sick. Because they spoiled me too much, wanted something to give, and ate too much. If I hadn't been to his house for a week, Grandpa would have taken time out on Sundays, even for a while, to come to my house to see us. When I was young, I was cute and very likable, so my grandfather was particularly fond of me.

He would let me ride on him, and he would be a big horse on the ground. Looking back now, how many children could be as happy as I was? Grandpa often travels because of his work, but whether it is at home or abroad, the first thing to do when he returns to Beijing is to come to see us and bring us gifts every time. I remember once my sister and I were sick and hospitalized at the same time, I don't know where my grandfather came back from a business trip, as soon as I heard that I immediately came to the hospital to see me, my sister was unhappy about this matter for a while. Another time, Grandpa came back from abroad and brought me a doll in a gauze skirt, and brought a doll in a national costume to my sister, and my sister was very jealous of me without my doll. After Grandpa's death, we all grew up, and whenever we talked about Grandpa, my sister often mentioned it. In almost every letter my grandfather wrote to my parents, we were mentioned.

Grandpa held me at huanghuamen's house in 1956

On October 12, 1957, in Prague, Czech Republic, he wrote to my mother: "Little proverb ... You and your mother are not in favor of me buying more toys for children, I always miss them abroad, how can I not buy some toys for them when I see them? I don't have much pocket money, I can't buy expensive things, I can only buy some toys, new flags (sister Sa new flags) and dots (my nickname), do you want your father-in-law to come? I think about them every day, you tell them, when the father-in-law came back to China, there were a lot of things for them, a handbag in Xinqi is very good, can be used until the teenage, a little handbag is also very interesting, and there are fun dolls." The letter of 1958 reads: "Little proverb... Do you miss us? (My mother was in the countryside at the time) We missed you every day, a little lively and cute, knew everything, could say anything, and would be likable, would greet people, and children like this were rare." On October 15, 1958, grandpa wrote in his last letter to my mother: "Little proverb... I was leaving for Afghanistan early in the morning the day after tomorrow (seventeenth), via the Soviet Union. ...... A little cute, talking, cute, and very obedient, the new flag is very hard. ...... We are moving towards the communist society that has been established for the first time in human history, how can we not exert more effort and sweat more..." From the words and lines of these family letters, we can see Grandpa's warmth and care for the family, the love and pity for the younger generations, and the confidence in the beautiful prospects of the motherland's construction. We never thought that Grandpa would never come back after this trip.

My grandfather, mother, and sister were photographed with me at my home in Huanghuamen in 1956

The next memory is Grandpa's study. At that time, my grandfather's family lived in Huanghuamen on Jingshan Back Street in Dongcheng District, which was a small courtyard, a north room, two west rooms, two south rooms, and only one east room, that is, Grandpa's study. The impression was that the room had no windows, but the room was very tall, and all three walls were lined with bookshelves, which were more than three meters high. The books on the shelves are dazzling, some horizontal, some vertical, wired books and foreign documents, of course, the most attractive to us is the villain book. There was a writing desk in the house, a lamp on the desk, a wooden chair with armrests, and a small wooden ladder leaning against the door. Because the bookshelf is very high, Grandpa often uses that ladder when looking for books. At that time, because we were all young, we were rarely allowed to enter the study.

Grandpa and Grandma

After my grandfather's death, my grandmother, in accordance with my grandfather's last wishes, donated all the books in the collection— Chinese-bound books and books in foreign languages— a total of 17,224 copies, totaling 94,441 volumes, all of which were donated to the state (now preserved in the National Library). Those shelves were empty. But then I had a very close contact with those bookshelves.

Grandpa, sister and I in 1956

In 1966... Moved to the residence of the Ministry of Culture of Hepingli arranged by the Ministry of Culture, and was in the unit building of Xinhua Xili. Because the building is too low, the bookshelf more than three meters high cannot be put in at all, and my family lives in a bungalow, and the house is relatively high, so these bookshelves have been moved to my house. My family also has a lot of books, because my father also did cultural work, and there are about eleven or twelve shelves in my house, and my house is also filled with all kinds of books: culture, history, world famous books and various reference books, and we often travel in this sea of books. These bookshelves became the most precious pieces of furniture in my study, and they have been in my house for thirty-eight years. It was not until 2004 that my grandfather's ancestral home, Changle City, Fujian Province, established a memorial hall for my grandfather, hoping that the family would donate the items they had used outside the country to their hometown. At this point, these bookshelves left my home and were placed in the Zheng Zhenduo Memorial Hall in Changle, Fujian.

Grandpa and mother

Another thing worth mentioning is that after the founding of the People's Republic of China, the State Administration of Cultural Relics was established, my grandfather was the first director of the Bureau of Cultural Relics, when the Bureau of Cultural Relics acquired and accepted more and more books and cultural relics donated by private individuals, in order not to lose and damage the country's cultural relics, grandpa presided over the formulation of the "Regulations on the Protection of Cultural Relics" and the "Code of Rules for The Staff of Cultural Relics". In the Code of Practice for Heritage Workers, there is an article that reads: "Individual cultural relics workers are not allowed to collect and buy and sell cultural relics. It is strictly forbidden to use one's authority to preserve cultural relics for oneself and others in the collection and acquisition of cultural relics." This code has not changed so far. I remember that when Mr. Luo Zhewen was alive, he met me several times and said the same thing to me: "It is because of the rules and regulations set by your grandfather that those of us who do cultural relics work cannot collect cultural relics."

Grandpa will receive the cultural relics, in the Tuancheng Chengguang Hall or the exhibition room of the Beijing Library, first hold some small exhibitions, such as calligraphy and paintings, ceramics or rare books, and write instruction cards for each piece, and all private donations will be carefully marked on the cards to welcome relevant people to visit. In this way, more and more people are concerned about the protection of cultural relics, and more and more people are donating cultural relics from their family collections.

Grandpa's Certificate of Revolutionary Martyrs

In 1952, Grandpa donated about 570 pieces of pottery figurines that he collected and purchased before liberation to the Central People's Government. Grandpa often said that we must love the motherland, we must understand the history of the motherland, cultural relics are an integral part of history, a witness to the level of culture and art in a country, and also the crystallization of the wisdom of the working people, we should be proud, because our motherland has a long history, our industrious ancestors, with labor and wisdom to create a splendid culture.
