On the morning of October 25, more than 40 volunteer veterans gathered in a hotel on Huizhou Avenue in Hefei, Anhui Province, to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the volunteer army's combat in North Korea, with an average age of 87 years old. The organizer, 88-year-old veteran Hua Wen, said that for these veterans now, living health is the greatest happiness, and I don't know how many more veterans will be able to come here next year.
After more than a month of sunny days, Hefei ushered in a gentle autumn rain, revealing a slight chill, but the conference room was warm. The 88-year-old Chinese, whose ancestral home is Jintan, Jiangsu Province, entered the military camp in September 1949 at the age of 19 and entered the DPRK two years later. As an artilleryman, he participated in several battles such as the Battle of Shangganling and the Battle of Jincheng Counterattack, and was wounded twice.
The 88-year-old Chen Longhai still speaks at the memorial, and his voice is still loud. Elder Chen Longhai had participated in the Battle of Shangganling twice, and he was the only survivor of the 246 comrades in his company. After the speech, the old man still led everyone to sing the volunteer battle song.
The 82-year-old Yang Kemei, who was already a volunteer soldier at the age of 14, was responsible for the supply of ammunition and food on the front line in the battlefield of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and was the main target of enemy aircraft bombing and attack. Once, on the way to transport ammunition, he was suddenly bombed by enemy aircraft, and Yang Kemei witnessed his comrades sitting next to him being killed by a piece of shrapnel.
Song Zuyong, an 82-year-old veteran who fought in the Battle of Shangganling, had his hands severed in a bayonet, and there are still a few fingers that cannot be straightened and scars on his chest.
