In September last year, the Red Cross Society of China began its recommendation work after receiving a notification from the ICRC on the nomination of candidates for the 48th Nightingale Prize. Wang Ping introduced that the Red Cross Society of China has formulated a plan for the selection of candidates for the 48th Nightingale Medal, and issued a notice on recommending candidates for the 48th Nightingale Medal, emphasizing the priority of recommending nursing staff who have outstanding performance in the fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic in 2020.

In December 2020, the Red Cross Society of China organized the National Health Commission, the Logistics Support Department of the Central Military Commission, the Chinese Nursing Society, and representatives of previous Nightingale Award winners to hold a meeting of the Selection Committee to review and review the candidates, and after the final review, Cheng Shouzhen and 11 others were determined to be the recommended candidates for the 48th Nightingale Award.
Wang Ping said that after there was no objection to the announcement of the candidates, the Red Cross Society of China submitted to the International Committee of the Red Cross the list and materials of the candidates for the 48th Nightingale Prize in China. The ICRC organizes the evaluation of candidates recommended by States.
It is worth mentioning that this year's Nightingale Award has a total of 25 nurses from 18 countries, of which three outstanding nursing workers in China have won awards. China is the country with the largest number of winners this year and the only country with three winners.
