Zhang Shaozu detailed the whereabouts of Zhang Yu's treasures after his death. He said that after Zhang Yu died in Beijing in 1937, only Zhang Yu's third son, Zhang Yuanqun, remained in Tianjin. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Zhang Yuanqun deposited more than a dozen boxes of gold stones, inscriptions, calligraphy and paintings, famous ink, jade, and seals hidden in the "Four Dang Zhai" zhai into the underground warehouse of the Bank of China in Tianjin for safekeeping. At the end of 1941, the bank was quickly taken over by the Japanese. Zhang Yuanqun was active in many ways, and through the General Director of japan in Suzhou, he found the Japanese defense commander in Tianjin and the captain of the Japanese gendarmerie before allowing the cultural relics to be taken away and deposited in the Jincheng Bank until they were withdrawn after liberation. In 1954, the Zhang brothers were ordered by their mother to donate all the cultural relics left by Zhang Yu to the state.
Zhang Yuanshan's diary records that "on May 5, Zhang Yuanshan, on behalf of his family, submitted donation documents to Zheng Zhenduo, then director of the Cultural Relics Bureau of the Central Ministry of Culture, and on June 15, Luo Ziqi, the son of Luo Zhenyu, presided over the opening of the box together with the staff of the Ministry of Culture. The artifacts were transported from Tianjin to Beijing at the time, totaling 16 boxes. The Ministry of Culture successively, lasting about half a month, selected cultural relics of important cultural value and collected them, a total of 751 items." Later, according to Ji Yaping, a staff member of the National Library, the Golden Stone Takumoto was transferred from the Ministry of Culture to the National Library. Through the continuous collation and collection of the National Library, so far, the number of Zhang Yu's old collection of gold and stone extensions in the National Library is quite large, a total of 2104 kinds, 2495 pieces, of which the entire collection of rubbings has been established.
Regarding the handling of the "Four Dangzhai" books, Zhang Yu's will said that those who had his hands should be well preserved, and the rest of the kinds that could be given to people could be distributed to Chonghua Academic Institutions. In view of the suspension of the Tianjin Chonghua Society after the fall of Tianjin in July 1937, the family decided to give and store Zhang Yu's collection of books at Yenching University. On October 23, 1937, Zhang Yu's wife, Ms. Zhang Wang Danfen, led Zhang Yu's children to formally sign the "Testament Contract for Gifting and Pinning the Old Man of Frost Root" with Yenching University in the name of Party A and Party B, respectively, and the Zhang family of Party A gave or deposited Zhang Yu's collection into three categories: "Son, Ugly, and Yin". At that time, the signatory of B was also Stuart Layden. The two parties agreed that the "sub-categories" of the collection, namely hand-school books and hand-copied books, shall be kept by Party B (Yenching University) but can be retrieved at any time; the "ugly category" is a good book, including old engraved books and various manuscripts, which shall be stored in Party B's library for five years, and after the expiration of the period, or taken or continued, according to the circumstances, Party A shall determine; "Yin Class" is an ordinary book, which is completely given to Party B. In accordance with the requirements previously agreed upon by the Zhang family, this contract was printed together with Zhang Yu's photographs and biographies in the "Bibliography of the Zhang Family's Four Dangzhai Collections" compiled by Gu Tinglong later, and together with Zhang Yu's collection, it was later passed down.
The collection of books donated by descendants is distributed in Suzhou, Beijing
In 1941, the Pacific War broke out, and the Zhang Yu "Four Dangzhai" collection of books donated and stored at Yenching University was in a very dangerous situation. Zhang Yuanqun took advantage of his social connections to entrust people everywhere to take care of this batch of books, including Wang Yiling, general manager of Tianjin Jincheng Bank, Yin Tong, head of the pseudo-Jidong government, Wang Shijing, president of the pseudo-United Bank, Zhang Shucheng, a large collector in Tianjin, and others.
Zhang Shaozu said that in 1952, the departments of colleges and universities across the country were adjusted, and the library collection of Yenching University was all included in the library of Peking University. With the merger of the libraries of the two universities, all the "Yin-class" books donated to Yenching University by Zhang Yu's "Four Dangzhai" collections were all included in the Peking University Library. For the "sub-categories" (561 species, 4192 volumes) and "ugly categories" (376 species, 2264 volumes) deposited by the Zhang family at Yenching University, the Zhang family decided to donate them to the Beijing Library (now the National Library) after consultation. On October 16, 1952, the donation ceremony of the "Sidangzhai Collection" was held, and the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China awarded the Zhang family with an award signed by Minister of Culture Shen Yanbing. The original manuscript of the monograph "Four Dangzhai Collections" is stored in the Suzhou Municipal Library. Xinbao reporter Shan Weiwei drafted Zhang Chi
