In early June, together with experts from Bangxi, Datianpo Deer Reserve and Kadoorie, Hong Kong, I conducted another field survey of Hainan po deer. Walking between the familiar mountains and meadows, watching the deer rush past from time to time, I was really in a cheerful mood and full of energy. In addition to the deer on the slope of Hainan, there are many other small animals, birds, insects, etc. in the reserve, and the biodiversity is very rich and dizzying.
The Hainan Po deer is very famous, is a unique species of Hainan Island and China, and is also one of the first important local protected species that I knew about since I came to Hainan Island.
Hainan Po deer is handsome in appearance, alert, agile, slender and healthy, and is an animal loved by everyone.

In fact, 100 years ago, the Hainan po deer was widely distributed and the number of Hainan islands was also very large, which was not unusual. Later, with the gradual increase in the population of Hainan Island, the impact of human activities continued to expand, especially because the Hainan slope deer is full of treasures, its deer antlers, horns, blood, tendons, whips, tails, meat, placenta, etc. can be medicated, even bones and skin can be boiled into bone glue to eat, so they have also been bad luck, the wind of indiscriminate hunting and killing spread, making the number of deer on the slope of Hainan sharply reduced. By the early 1970s, the census showed that there were only more than 20 deer left on Hainan Island! It has reached the brink of extinction.
In 1976, in the tropical hilly grasslands of Datian Township, Dongfang County, southwest of Hainan Island, the government set up a nature reserve to protect the unique and final po deer on these islands, and the dozens of po deer in the reserve became the only hope for the restoration of this species. A large number of experts and reserve staff have put countless efforts into protecting this species.
In March 1990, I conducted my first interview report on Polu in Hainan. At that time, the living and working conditions in the Daejeon Reserve were difficult. There was no room to live in, and Feng Ju, then the station chief of the Daejeon Conservation Area, made room for me, an uninvited guest, to put a wooden board on the ground and used it as a bed, which was barely a place to live. At night, the sweltering heat and swarms of mosquitoes make it difficult to sleep. There was no place to eat, so I had to settle it with a partner at Feng Station Manager's house. At that time, the number of deer on the slope was very small and very scary, and it was difficult to interview and shoot. Since then, for more than 20 years, I have continued to pay attention to and report on the conservation dynamics of the Hainan po deer in order to attract more people's attention to this species, and I am really happy for every bit of progress that the po deer have made on the road of survival.

Inspection, very hard work, to follow the planned route through the forest, no road to go, just use a machete to cut the road out. In the sweltering woods, it is often only possible to walk two or three kilometers in a morning.
This expedition used "high-tech" equipment and used drones and infrared cameras to conduct aerial surveys at night, and the effect was good. This is the first time this advanced method has been used in the po deer survey.
