Beijing, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations World Food Programme and cargill, a global agricultural and food company, jointly launched a three-year pilot project on integrated agricultural risk management in Songyuan, Jilin Province, on June 17.

Cargill donated $1 million to WFP to reduce and eliminate risks to corn farmers, helping them improve food security while strengthening the resilience of rural communities.

WFP Representative in China Qu Sixi said: "WFP would like to thank Cargill for its generous support. We share a shared vision to reduce the risks and vulnerabilities posed by shocks, achieve sustainable food security and improve the sustainability of food systems. Assisting corn farmers and improving their agricultural risk management and sustainable production capacity is an important aspect of our partnership with Cargill. We work with governments and businesses to increase agricultural productivity and farmers' incomes to make food systems more resilient and sustainable. ”

The project aims to increase the resilience of corn farmers in the pilot areas to impacts and promote sustainable agricultural practices in corn cultivation through the application of innovative financial risk transfer methods of "insurance + futures".

In addition, the project will provide regular agricultural risk management training to local farmers each year to improve farmers' livelihoods and enhance the overall agricultural risk management of the corn industry.

Liu Jun, President of Cargill China, said: "This year marks the 50th anniversary of Cargill's entry into the Chinese market, and this signing project is an important part of Cargill's 50th anniversary activities, cargill continues to contribute to farmers' income, rural revitalization and sustainable agricultural development. Cargill has partnered with the World Food Programme since 2001 to provide health and nutrition assistance to people in need in Africa, Central and South America and Asia. (End)
