In 221 BC, Qin Shi Huang established the Qin Dynasty. Under the county system, the Qin Dynasty established Jiexiu County in the area, which belonged to Taiyuan County, along with Wu County. During the Western Han Dynasty, the area around present-day Jiexiu City in Jinzhong City belonged to Jiexiu County, Taiyuan County, Andzhou. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the area still belonged to Taiyuan County. At this historical stage of the Three Kingdoms, the Three Kingdoms of Wei Shu and Wu were established, and the area around the present-day county-level city of Jiexiu became the territory of Cao Wei. After Sima Yan established the Western Jin Dynasty, he changed the boundary of Xiu County to Jiexiu County, that is, because of The Push of Jiezi, it was renamed Jiexiu County. During the Northern Qi Tianbao period (after 550 AD), Jiexiu County was merged into Yong'an County (present-day Xiaoyi). In the first year of Tang Wude (618 AD), that is, in the early Tang Dynasty, Jiexiu County was renamed Jiezhou County, which belonged to Jiezhou and also led Pingyao County. In the first year of Zhenguan (627), during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, Jiezhou was abolished, and Jiexiu County and Pingyao County were changed to Fenzhou. In the middle and late Tang Dynasty, Fenzhou Prefecture was established, and Jiexiu County belonged to it. Entering the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Jiexiu County belonged to Fenzhou, Taiyuan Province. After the establishment of the Northern Song Dynasty, Hedong Road was established, and Jiexiu County belonged to Jiexiu County, the capital of Hedong Road.

Finally, during the Southern Song Dynasty, Jiexiu County was northeast of hebei Road to Fenzhou. After the establishment of the Yuan Dynasty, Jiexiu County belonged to Jining Road Fenzhou. After Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, Jiexiu County belonged to Shanxi Chengcheng and declared the political envoy Sifen Prefecture. After the Qing Dynasty replaced the Ming Dynasty, Jiexiu County belonged to Fenzhou Prefecture in Shanxi Province. By 1914, Jiexiu County came under the jurisdiction of Jining Province (present-day Yangqu County). In 1928, Jiexiu County was directly under the administration of Shanxi Province. On February 10, 1992, Jiexiu County was abolished and a county-level Jiexiu City was established. In September 1999, the Jinzhong District was abolished and the prefecture-level city of Jinzhong was established, and the county-level Jiexiu City was replaced by the prefecture-level Jinzhong City directly under the jurisdiction of Shanxi Province.
