Why did The Brinchen Whale "visit" the Greater Bay Area?

China News Service Shenzhen, July 9 Title: Why did The Bushi whale "come" to the Greater Bay Area?

China News Service reporter Wang Jian

After 16 years, another Bu's whale came to Dapeng Bay in Shenzhen. On June 29, a "mysterious guest" was welcomed along the coast of Dapeng Bay, a sub-adult Bruce whale with a body length of nearly 8 meters. Over the past few days, the Brinze whale has been swimming in the blue sea and blue sky, which has received widespread attention from the society, and many netizens affectionately call this Bushi whale "Xiaobu".

"Yesterday was the tenth day of 'Xiaobu' coming to Shenzhen, and it is currently very active and has a relatively strong vitality." The relevant person in charge of the Dapeng Management Bureau of the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment introduced to reporters on the 9th that "Xiaobu" has eaten frequently for several days, sometimes in just 1 hour to prey on 10 times.

Bryde's whale is a national key protected wildlife in China, the only baleen whale that lives all year round in warm waters near the equator, and is currently divided into two species, far sea and nearshore, and is known as one of the most mysterious cetaceans. At present, there is very little research on this species in the world, and its population size, range of activities, and living habits are not fully clear.

Why does "Xiaobu" appear in Dapeng Bay? According to zoologists, one reason may be "navigation failure" and another reason may be "chasing predatory fish into Dapeng Bay", but there is no confirmation but now, and the specific reasons have yet to be examined and studied.

"Judging from the trajectory of the 'small cloth' and the vital signs, there is no sign of stranding." Zoological experts believe that the behavior of "Xiaobu" is completely different from the behavior pattern of cetaceans before they ran aground, and "Xiaobu" may enter Dapeng Bay due to chasing fish.

"Guangdong's ecology continues to improve, which may also be one of the incentives for 'Xiaobu' to visit." The relevant person in charge of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province said that the province has continued to strengthen the prevention and control of pollution in coastal waters in recent years, and in 2020, the department, together with the Guangdong Provincial Marine Comprehensive Law Enforcement Corps, the Guangdong Maritime Safety Bureau, and the Guangdong Coast Guard Bureau, carried out joint actions for pollution prevention and control in coastal waters, inspected more than 1,300 marine (coastal) projects, 16,000 ships, and 3,119 times into the sea, investigated and dealt with 71 illegal cases, and effectively curbed illegal acts of marine ecological environment.

In recent years, the ecological recovery of Guangdong's coastal waters has been remarkable. According to the monitoring of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province, in 2020, the area of excellent water quality (Category I and II) in the coastal waters of Guangdong reached 89.5%; in the four seas of the Pearl River Estuary, Daya Bay, Leizhou Peninsula Coral Reef and Nan'ao Island, the marine biodiversity index averaged 1.94, 2.63, 2.86 and 3.16 respectively.

The relevant person in charge of the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment told reporters that in order to "return" a blue sea and blue sky near shenzhen, they have carried out a three-dimensional inspection of the city's 311.4 kilometers of land coastline and 3 islands such as Neiling Island, Da Chan Island and Xiaozhou Island, and comprehensively carried out classified treatment of the discharge of sea discharge, effectively controlling the discharge of sewage to meet the standards.

"In order to fill the gap in the supervision of the ecological environment in the coastal zone of Shenzhen, we organized a high-precision remote sensing survey of the coastal zone." According to the person in charge, according to the natural environmental conditions of the coastal zone and the development and utilization of the coastal zone, the bureau has formulated the remote sensing classification standard of "land domain - shoreline - sea area" in the coastal zone, determined about 240,000 ecological environment classification and control units, and established an investigation and evaluation system connected with the ecological environment of the land zone.

"Now, in this area, there are Chinese white dolphins, curly-winged pelicans, black-faced spoonbills, blue roundhorns, turtles and other animals." The relevant person in charge of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province said that the Pearl River Estuary, located at the southern end of the Chinese mainland, is an important marine natural resources reserve in China, and there are nature reserves such as the Pearl River Estuary Chinese White Dolphin Nature Reserve, the Futian Mangrove Forest Nature Reserve, and the Daya Bay Aquatic Resources Nature Reserve, which provide a suitable natural environment for the animals that inhabit here.

Guangdong's marine ecology continues to improve, in addition to the governance of relevant departments, it is also inseparable from the enhancement of citizens' awareness of ecological protection. According to reports, the "small cloth" was first discovered by Shenzhen fishermen, and then quickly reported to the relevant local departments. Immediately after, a multi-party joint "whale protection" operation began.

Since July 2, Dapeng New Area has convened a number of departments to set up a joint working group on the protection of Brinell whales to do a good job in the protection of Brinell whales. Maritime, coast guard, marine comprehensive law enforcement and ecological environment and other relevant departments have also carried out a series of maritime joint inspection activities.

Zoologists remind that cetaceans are very sensitive to human activities at sea, and activities such as ship navigation and fishing are prone to adverse effects. At present, the marine comprehensive law enforcement department reminds fishing boats and fishermen through various channels to pay attention to avoidance, do not approach and watch the "small cloth", and organize law enforcement boats to distribute proposals to all kinds of boats in the surrounding waters.

At present, thanks to the joint efforts of many parties, "Xiaobu" is still staying in the Dapeng Sea and shows no signs of leaving. (End)
