The word "Danxia" comes from Cao Pi's "Furong Pond Poem" of the Three Kingdoms: "Danxia sandwiches the bright moon, and the stars come out of the clouds." "It refers to the brilliant rainbow in the sky." The term "Danxia" originated in danxia mountain in Guangdong and was first used by geologists in the 1920s. As a geological term, "Danxia" refers to a geomorphological landscape characterized by steep cliff slopes composed of red continental clastic rocks.
According to Xiao Shizhen, associate professor and ph.D. of the Karst Research Institute of Guizhou Normal University, compared with the Danxia landforms in other regions of the world, the six landforms contained in "China Danxia" (Guizhou Chishui, Fujian Taining, Hunan Kunshan, Guangdong Danxia Mountain, Jiangxi Longhu Mountain, Zhejiang Jianglang Mountain) clearly show the sequence of landforms from "youth" and "prime age" to "old age" in turn. Among them, Chishui Danxia belongs to the "early youth" in the evolution of Danxia landform, which can be described as a handsome "small fresh meat".
Evolution pattern of Chishui Danxia landform
Paleocian sedimentary period: Middle and late Triassic to Cretaceous. In this period, Chishui was in an inland lake basin environment, and a combination of red layers and coal-containing layers with a thickness of up to thousands of meters was deposited, which prepared a good material foundation for the development of the later Chishui Danxia landform.
Ascending and ablative period: late Cretaceous to Neogene. During this period, the deposited thick horizontal red layer exposed the surface and underwent a long period of erosion and leveling, and the terrain was more undulating.
Young Danxia I: Quaternary. The red layer where the Danxia District of Chishui is located is affected by the rapid uplift of the Guizhou Plateau and rises significantly. The Chishui River and its tributaries are strongly cut down by this influence, shaping the deeper canyons. Due to the impact of neutral collapse, some Chibi Danxia began to develop around the terrace, but the height was not large.
Young Danxia II: The Present Stage. With the continuous cutting of the Chishui River and its tributaries, the Danxia landform develops deeper, and the Danxia cliffs up to hundreds of meters high can be seen everywhere.
