When Ma Teng's father lost his official position when he was young, the family fell into the middle of the road, and he could only cut firewood for a living; but this did not hinder his ambitions. However, similar to Dong Zhuo, he also changed the trajectory of his life by putting down the rebellion of the Qiang people.
Not many years after Dong Zhuoping rebelled against the Qiang people of Xiliang, the Qiang people rebelled again. Ma Teng's bravery and strategy in the counterinsurgency war were appreciated, and after being murdered by his subordinates because of the local assassin Shi Geng, Ma Teng and the rebel leader Han Sui attempted to join forces to divide Xiliang.
