Hat-wearing langur

trachypithecus shortridgei

Vertebrates, mammals, primates, monkey family, also known as bear hat langur, Shaw langur, national first-class protected animals. It mainly inhabits evergreen broad-leaved forest monsoon and semi-evergreen forest at an altitude of 1100-2400 meters, and is mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of Dulong river in China. Photo taken in Dulongjiang.

In addition to dulongjiang, in 2017, a hooded langur (trachypithecus pileatus) was discovered in Tibet, because of the obvious difference in appearance between the two, so some scholars suggested that the Dulongjiang hated langur be named trachypithecus shortridgei.

The larvae of the Dulongjiang hated langur are orange-yellow and very cute. Adult body length is 50 to 72 cm, the body is silver gray, the hands and feet are dark gray, the tail color is darker, the legs are light gray, and the facial skin is bright black "wrapped male color", which is in great contrast with the gray fur around the body. The narrow and oblique black eyebrow bands that fly into the sideburns, as well as the two gray hairs on the cheeks, make the face of the hooded langur into a palm-sized "net red face".

The hat-wearing langur has long and sparse body hair, the top hair is fluffy, there is no whirling hair, and the crown is dark, as if wearing a "small hat", which is also the origin of its name. In addition, the thick and straight tail is also extremely bright, and the tail length can reach 70 to 100 cm, which is slightly longer than the body.

Hated langur is a male and female, is a social animal, each group of 7 to 10 or so varies, hated langur birth period of 3-7 months, there are differences between groups. The gestation period is about 200 days.

Some scholars have observed its time allocation and found that hat-wearing langurs have the highest proportion of time foraging, followed by rest and movement. However, the allocation of time varies among hat-weary langurs of different ages. In the "infancy" period, they spend the most time moving and playing, the least time to eat and rest, and part of the time they are carried by adult females or young monkeys. "Adolescence" spends less time moving and playing than in infancy and more than adult individuals, and rest periods are somewhere in between.

In addition, the researchers found that the hooded langurs ate seasonal differences, preferring to eat young leaves, mature leaves and mosses in the spring, and ripe leaves and petioles in the winter, while summer and autumn preferred to fruit. This has to do with the availability of food.

In addition, moss is also one of the important foods of the hated langur, scholar Li Yingchun believes that this is because many bryophytes have antibacterial effects, hat-wearing langurs in the feeding of bryophytes at the same time, corresponding to some clay, salt and epiphytes on the moss invertebrates, therefore, the moss on the cliff in addition to providing a certain amount of energy to the Dulongjiang hated langur, but also can provide trace elements, salt and some high-protein invertebrates.

Due to the narrow and fragmented distribution area, at present, the population of hatted langurs in Dulongjiang is only about 250 to 370, coupled with the lack of human interference, the mystery of this species still needs to be studied.
