"Xiangshan Character" Huang Zuo: Immersed in cultivating the cultural context of cultivation and indoctrination of future generations

Huang Zuo (1490-1566), a famous thinker, educator, and philologist, was a native of Tiecheng, Xiangshan County (now part of Shiqi, Zhongshan City). He wrote diligently throughout his life, and his contributions to local literature were particularly outstanding, including "Biography of Guangzhou Characters", "Chronicle of Guangzhou Prefecture", "Tongzhi of Guangdong", "Tongzhi of Guangxi", "Chronicle of Xiangshan County", "Zhi of Luofu Mountain", and "ZhiyongZhi", leaving records that can be preserved and can be learned for future generations.

Huang Zuo was born in Xiangmendi, and his father Huang Qi was a confucian who was famous for his character. At the age of twenty, Huang Zuo became interested in compiling local documents. In order to make up for the gap between Fan Yao's "Biography of the Ancestors of Jiaoguang" and Lu Yin's "Biography of the Sages of Guangzhou", under the guidance of his father, he collected information from a large number of historical records, summarized and summarized, and classified the deeds of the 199 Cantonese sages in history, objectively reflected them, and slightly commented on them, and compiled them into "Biographies of Guangzhou Characters".

In 1526, Yao Lai, who was then the revision of the history of the state of Hanlin Academy, praised Huang Zuo when he wrote the preface to the "Biography of The Characters of Guangzhou", "Summarizing the Qundian To Compile Its Escape; Refer to the Facts, to Determine Its Falsehood", "To Distinguish the Gains and Losses of The Previous History, to Distinguish its Subtleties; to Follow the Righteous Examples of Famous Scholars, to Wantonly Refer to Them". Regarding Zhang Zhensun of the South China Sea in the Song Dynasty, the History of Song, the History of Yuan and other books record that when the Yuan soldiers attacked Lingnan, Zhang Zhensun sacrificed the city of Guangzhou to surrender to the enemy. In the face of these so-called zhengshi's evaluation of Zhang's family, Huang Zuo adhered to the attitude of seeking truth from facts, and in the "Biography of Zhang Zhensun", he first described the miracle of Zhang Zhensun's examination of zhongzhuangyuan with extraordinary talents, and made an exception to record the full text of his more than 8,000-word article on the court examination, so that readers can see Zhang Zhensun's fearless spirit of worrying about the country and the people, daring to speak directly, the courage to accept orders in the face of danger, and the hatred for the Yuan people. Finally, Huang Zuo pointed out that Zhang Zhensun was arrested and died in yushan Road, Wen Tianxiang had an elegy to mourn, and Chen Zhongwei and Dong Shiqian recorded this incident, indicating that Zhang Zhensun was martyred and righteous, not surrendered to the Yuan soldiers. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, Qian Shisheng's Book of the Southern Song Dynasty not only adopted Huang Zuo's "Biography of Zhang Zhensun", but also believed that Zhang's death was a heroic act that has been famous for eternity. It can be seen that Huang Zuo's "Guangzhou Character Biography" has an impact on later generations.

The value of local literature lies in "capital governance, history preservation, and indoctrination", and Huang Zuo promoted this value to the countryside to make it fully manifest. In 1546, when Huang Zuo was the general editor of the "Xiangshan County Chronicle", he personally formulated and compiled all the examples, and asked the doorman Yang Weizhen and others to draft and compile them, and he made the final polish. Huang Zuo compiled some of the contents of his "Township Rituals" into his zhi, and then purchased official land under the Lotus Peak Mountain in Xiangshan Mountain, established a righteous field, built an ancestral hall, and led by example to implement the township ceremony, hoping that the descendants of his hometown would be able to practice his ideal of indoctrination and simple folk customs. Two years later, the "Chronicle of Xiangshan County" was compiled and published, and Huang Zuo said that it was a chronicle of "observing evil in the terroir, observing the consumption of the people's property, judging the relaxation of political affairs, educating and rejuvenating, officials and teachers with the audit of xian, Li Xian with examination of prosperity and decline, art and literature for the record of letters, and magazines to distinguish the details of demons", and later generations called Huang Zuo's "Xiangshan County Chronicle" "a vast ceremony for more than three hundred years, and it has been a good time to be polite." Because the old chronicle does not exist, this chronicle has become the earliest "Xiangshan County Chronicle" that can be seen today, and only one of them exists at Kyoto University in Japan, which is extremely precious.
