The former site of the Chahar Metropolitan Office is a Qing Dynasty Metropolitan Office building located in Mingde North Street, Zhangjiakou City. In 1993, it was announced as the third batch of provincial-level cultural relics protection units in Hebei Province, and in 2006, it was announced as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units, and the Chahar capital was set up in the 26th year of The Qianlong Dynasty (1761), and was built in the 27th year of Qianlong (1762), and was built by the second capital, Balpin.

The whole building is based on the Qing Dynasty Yipin official regulations, the layout is mainly based on the middle road building, supplemented by the east and west roads, covering an area of more than 10,000 square meters. The existing Middle Road building is 162.25 meters long from north to south, 44.96 meters wide from east to west, and covers an area of about 7300 square meters. According to the distribution of buildings, it is naturally divided into four courtyards. The central axis is symmetrical, the front is facing the back, the majesty is solemn, and the etiquette is strict.

In the Qing Dynasty, there were three capital offices, Rehe, Urumqi and Chahar, and the Chahar Capital Office was unique. First of all, among all the generals and commanders at that time, the Chahar metropolitan government had the largest number of officers and soldiers under its jurisdiction, with a total of more than 19,000 officers and soldiers. Secondly, among the three garrison capitals set up in the Qing Dynasty, the Chahar capital was the earliest. Today, the Rehe and Urumqi Metropolitan Offices no longer exist, and the Chahar Metropolitan Office is the only Qing Dynasty metropolitan office building preserved in the country.
