Nandu News Reporter Xia Jiawen A few days ago, the 2020 Guangdong Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Science Popularization Month series of activities science popularization lecture hall was held in Guangzhou Zoo. Jie Xiaoyong, an associate researcher at the South China Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, suggested that in the context of the parallel names of "Chinese horseshoe" and "Chinese horseshoe" in the domestic literature, it is recommended to use "Chinese horseshoe crab" uniformly.

Horseshoe crabs are known as "living archaeology". More than 30 years ago, on the beaches in eastern and southern China, Chinese horseshoe crabs could be seen everywhere. However, in recent years, due to habitat loss, overfishing and other reasons, the population of horseshoe crabs has decreased sharply. Jie Xiaoyong introduced that the blood of the horseshoe crab has great economic value because it has become a raw material for the manufacture of "horseshoe reagent", and the Chinese horseshoe crab is already endangered.
Where is the endangered Chinese horseshoe crab? With the efforts of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Guangdong Province, through artificial breeding and scientific release, the protection of horseshoe crabs in Guangdong has made gratifying progress. Jie Xiaoyong introduced that at present, all species of the family Horseshoe are planned to be included in the list of national second-level protected animals, which will completely solve the problem of insufficient law enforcement basis for the protection of horseshoe crabs. The results of the Beibu Gulf Horseshoe Crab Expedition will provide a basic scientific basis for the formulation and implementation of various horseshoe crab conservation policies in the later period.
Jie Xiaoyong also pointed out that the parallel names of "Chinese horseshoe" and "Chinese horseshoe" in domestic literature often occur, leading to ambiguity, such as "Chinese horseshoe" may be understood as a horseshoe crab distributed in Chinese waters. He suggested that the vast number of scientific and technological personnel and the media respond to the state's call to "tell the Chinese story well, send out a good Chinese voice, and refine The new Chinese culture", and use the "Chinese horseshoe crab" in the writing and media dissemination of scientific and technological papers in the new era and new situation to help the public "recognize the horseshoe crab", so as to achieve the beautiful vision of "protecting the horseshoe crab for the whole people".
