The horseshoe crab has five pairs of gills, located behind its five pairs of appendages. The shell is divided into three parts, the front carapace, which is sleek in shape and protects most of its body, wrapping its eyes, appendages, stinging limbs, snout, brain and heart. Its abdomen is located in the middle and houses its gills and genitals. Its caudal segment is a hard tail spine, and when the horseshoe is reversed, it can be turned over by its tail spine. Blood is grayish blue because it contains cyanoporins in the blood. It is found in the Gulf of Mexico and on the east coast of North America
