A talented black pianist and a city-dweller who mingle in the security of a dance hall are hardly associated. But Green Book did. If you think about it again, in the social context of the deep social prejudice at that time, a black man wanted to go to the American South to play music that was originally his own to the white upper class. Dr. Shelley had his reasons for doing so, and he could have played music comfortably in the North for a higher pay. But he insisted on playing in the American South in order to change the prejudice and discrimination of white Americans against blacks. Dr. Shelley's trip to American music from north to south was fraught with all sorts of inequalities and thrills, so he needed a strong bodyguard and driver to accompany him. And this man, Dr. Shelley, chose Tony, a white American with a thick Italian accent.
Tony showed his toughness and strength as soon as he appeared, and any unreasonable person who tried to make trouble could not get a bargain in his place, and, more importantly, he, like most white people, had a deep prejudice against blacks at the beginning. Tony's wife, on the other hand, was in stark contrast to him and treated blacks with special kindness. Out of the need for money, Tony reluctantly accepted Dr. Shelley's invitation to join the Southern music journey. In the process, Tony also overcame his inner prejudices and gradually accepted the character of Shelley. With courage and responsibility, Tony impressed Dr. Shelley. Realizing that Tony might leave him, Dr. Shelley decisively promoted Tony to full tour manager. After trying on suits at a clothing store, a bar brawl, being arrested by a police officer, and eating in an auditorium toilet and a banquet hall, Tony completely changed his stereotype of black people. In the small matter of eating KFC fried chicken, the obvious contrast between the two makes the film more vivid and vivid.
The good thing about "Green Book" is that, putting aside those deep social background factors, the whole film is a continuous sublimation of self-awareness, not only involving individuals, but also about the entire country and society, which is a typical American mainstream value film work.
