The FCC document exposes new advances in Facebook Project Aria's augmented reality glasses

author:cnBeta

From the manual uploaded to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Facebook is building an experimental project aria augmented reality glasses code-named "gemini". The social networking giant announced the ARIA project in September 2020, knowing that gemini looks like regular glasses and can be fitted with optical lenses on demand. But beyond that, it's also equipped with a proximity sensor, a Qualcomm sensor, and the same camera sensor as the oculus quest 2 headset.

Facebook Gemini Augmented Reality Glasses also use a fitbit-style magnetic charging adapter and support data transfer. Through the companion app, users are also able to collect data uploaded by the glasses and check the connection status and battery life.

Although nothing is shared in the fcc manual, gemini is not actually a brand new project. What appears to be shared on the website is version 0.9 of the file, updated on August 28, 2020. That means Facebook has most likely implemented some changes over the past year.

Facebook pointed out on the project aria website that gemini is not a commercial product, nor is it a prototype of the product that will eventually be sold to ordinary consumers. In the manual published by FCC, the company reiterated this several times.

As an engineering product, gemini is only intended for use by Facebook insiders and is currently being worn by researchers on campus and in public. As for the privacy concerns, Facebook claims that it has a privacy model and that all data is collected anonymously.
